Home-Style Jar Cakes: A Baker's Delight

As a busy professional, finding time to bake can feel like a luxury. But sometimes, a sweet treat is just what you need to unwind after a long day. That's why I've fallen in love with this recipe for home-style jar cakes. Not only are they incredibly delicious, but they’re also incredibly convenient – perfect for busy lifestyles and even better for gifting!

The beauty of these little cakes is their individual portions. No messy slicing or uneven pieces. Each jar contains a perfectly portioned cake, ready to enjoy whenever the craving hits. I love the idea of having a few of these on hand in my pantry, perfect for an impromptu coffee break or a quick dessert after dinner. The process of baking them is surprisingly straightforward, even for someone with a limited amount of time and kitchen experience like myself.

The best part? These cakes keep exceptionally well. The canning jar method ensures that they stay fresh for a surprisingly long time, perfect for meal prepping and planning ahead. This means I can enjoy a homemade treat without the pressure of baking fresh every day. I often bake a batch on a weekend and they stay delicious all week. They are a great treat to have in the office as well.

Beyond the convenience, the taste is simply divine. The moist, perfectly textured cake is complemented by the nutty crunch of walnuts, creating a delicious balance of flavors and textures. The combination of brown and white sugar adds a depth of sweetness that’s not overly cloying. It’s the perfect amount of sweetness to satisfy my sweet tooth without being overwhelming.

Making these jar cakes has become my go-to baking project when I want to share something special with friends and family. The presentation is adorable and feels much more personal than buying store-bought treats. I've even started including these in holiday gift baskets – they're always a huge hit!

This recipe allows for some creativity. Feel free to experiment with different nuts, extracts or even add chocolate chips for an extra indulgent twist. The basic recipe is a solid foundation from which you can build your own delicious variations.

So, if you’re looking for a delicious, convenient, and delightful baking project, I highly recommend giving these home-style jar cakes a try. They’re sure to become a new favorite in your kitchen, whether you're a seasoned baker or a beginner like myself.

I love the simplicity of the recipe and the stunning results. It truly is a win-win! From a busy professional to someone simply wanting a treat that keeps well - these jar cakes are a home-run. They’re perfect for gifting, for keeping on hand for those unexpected sweet cravings or for impressing your friends at gatherings. Give these delicious cakes a try. You won't regret it.

Preparation tips: Make sure to properly sterilize your jars before you start. This is crucial for ensuring that the cakes store well. A clean workspace will go a long way to a smooth baking experience as well.

Storage: Keep the sealed jars in the refrigerator for prolonged storage. Once opened consume within 2-3 days.

Step-by-step

    • Sterilize 6 (1 pint) straight sided wide mouth canning jars, lids and rings by boiling for 10 minutes. Keep the lids and rings in the hot water until needed.
    • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Dry jars and let them come to room temperature.
    • Grease insides of jar well.
    • In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, soda and salt. Set aside.
    • In a large bowl, cream sugars and butter with electric mixer. Add eggs and mix well. Add milk and vanilla and mix well.
    • Add flour mixture and blend with a large spoon. Gently fold in nuts.
    • Place 1 cup batter into each of the greased one pint wide mouth canning jars. Wipe any batter from rim. Place jars on baking sheet.
    • Bake at 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) for 50 minutes or until toothpick inserted deep into center of cake comes out clean.
    • Make sure jar rims are clean. (If they're not, jars will not seal correctly).
    • While jars are still hot, place lids on jars, and screw rings on tightly. Jars will seal as they cool.
    • Place the jars on the counter and listen for them to "ping" as they seal. If you miss the "ping", wait until they are completely cool and press on the top of the lid. If it doesn't move at all, it's sealed.
    • Keep in refrigerator for prolonged storage.
