Slow Cooked Meat Sauce: A Culinary Journey

My Slow Cooked Meat Sauce: A Labor of Love (and Deliciousness!)

As a busy working mom, time in the kitchen is a precious commodity. Weeknights are often a whirlwind of homework help, soccer practice, and the ever-present mountain of laundry. Finding time to whip up a gourmet meal feels almost impossible. But there are some things that are worth the effort, things that bring family together around the table, things that nourish not only the body but also the soul. And that, my friends, is where my slow-cooked meat sauce comes in. It's a recipe I’ve perfected over the years – a testament to the magic of slow cooking and the simple joy of good food.

This isn't your average jarred sauce. Oh no, this is a culinary experience. The aroma alone is enough to make your mouth water. The rich, savory flavors deepen with every hour of simmering. The texture is perfect—a tender embrace of meaty goodness enveloped in a luscious, slightly thick sauce. It's the kind of sauce that makes you want to lick the bowl clean (and I often do!). But the best part? It’s surprisingly easy to make, despite the long simmering time. That's the beauty of slow cooking – you do the prep work, and the stove does the rest. I often begin this on a Sunday afternoon, leaving the delightful fragrance simmering throughout the house while I catch up with my family.

The Ingredients: A Symphony of Flavors

The key to this sauce's success lies in the quality of its ingredients. I use a blend of ground beef, veal, and pork for a richer, more complex flavor profile. The vegetables – carrots, celery, onions, and mushrooms – provide a subtle sweetness and earthiness that perfectly complements the meat. And of course, there are the tomatoes – the heart and soul of any good meat sauce. I prefer San Marzano tomatoes for their sweetness and intense flavor. The herbs and spices are carefully chosen to create a balanced and well-rounded taste. I like to add a touch of pizza seasoning for an extra kick, but feel free to experiment with your own favorite spices.

The Process: A Journey of Patience and Flavor

The magic happens during the long, slow simmer. The flavors meld and deepen, creating a sauce that's far more than the sum of its parts. I find that leaving the lid slightly ajar during the simmering process helps to prevent splattering and allows for the gentle evaporation of excess liquid, concentrating the flavors. The result is a luscious, thick sauce that clings perfectly to your pasta. And speaking of pasta, this sauce is equally delicious with spaghetti, rigatoni, or any of your favorite shapes.

More Than Just a Meal: A Family Tradition

This slow-cooked meat sauce is more than just a recipe; it's a tradition. It's the smell that brings back memories of childhood Sundays, of family gatherings, and of the simple joy of sharing a meal together. It's a dish that brings people together, that sparks conversations, and that creates lasting memories. It's a testament to the power of food to nourish not only our bodies but also our souls. And that, my friends, is why I continue to make this sauce again and again. It's a small act of love, a culinary hug that warms the heart and fills the belly with deliciousness.

Serving Suggestions: Elevate the Experience

For an extra touch of indulgence, serve your pasta with a sprinkle of freshly grated Parmesan cheese and a garnish of fresh basil leaves. A side salad with a light vinaigrette provides a refreshing contrast to the richness of the sauce. And don’t forget a crusty loaf of bread to soak up every last drop of this delicious creation! You can also add a dollop of ricotta cheese for extra creaminess, or a sprinkle of red pepper flakes for a little heat. The possibilities are endless!

So, my dear friends, I urge you to try this recipe. Embrace the slow cooking process, savor the aroma, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. It’s a culinary adventure that’s well worth the time and effort. The result will be a meal that nourishes your body and warms your soul – the perfect comfort food for busy weeknights or relaxed weekends. I guarantee you won't be disappointed!

Step-by-step

    • Heat the oil in a large heavy bottomed pot.
    • Add in carrots, celery, and half the onions.
    • Sprinkle a little pinch of salt and pepper.
    • Saute for a couple minutes, then add the mushrooms and continue sauteing till everything is soft.
    • Place the vegetables in the blender and add the 2 cans of tomatoes, juices and all, and blend till smooth.
    • In the pot, if needed add a bit of oil, or a bit of the chicken stock and add the second half of the onions.
    • Add salt and cook for about 2 minutes then add the minced garlic all at medium high heat.
    • Add all the meat and break it up with your wooden spoon or spatula. Cook till the meat is completely browned.
    • Pour off the accumulated fat (optional).
    • Add the cup of milk, stir well and reduce the heat to low.
    • Add the can of tomato paste and let it melt into the meat.
    • Add the blended tomato sauce, cup of chicken stock, and the spices, except for the basil.
    • Heat to bubbly and then turn down the heat to low, and simmer for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally.
    • Add more chicken stock or water if the sauce gets too thick.
    • Taste and adjust seasonings at the end.
    • Toss in the fresh basil leaves and bring the heat up to medium.
    • Serve over your favorite pasta, sprinkle with Parmesan and ENJOY!!!
