Homemade Cookie Mix in a Jar: The Perfect Gift

The Joy of Giving (and Baking!): Homemade Cookie Mix in a Jar

As a busy working mom, I’m always looking for ways to simplify my life while still creating special moments for my family and friends. That's where the magic of homemade gifts comes in. This year, I decided to ditch the generic store-bought presents and embrace the personal touch with something truly heartwarming: homemade cookie mix in a jar. Not only is it a thoughtful and unique gift, but it's also surprisingly easy to make, even amidst the chaos of everyday life. The best part? The recipient gets to experience the joy of baking and creating something delicious.

The process is incredibly straightforward. It's all about layering the dry ingredients—flour, sugar, spices, and all the delicious mix-ins—into a charming jar. I love using wide-mouth canning jars; they're perfect for this project. You can find them at most craft stores or even repurpose old ones you already have. Once the jar is beautifully layered, I add a personalized touch with a piece of festive fabric tied around the lid, creating a truly delightful presentation. A simple tag with baking instructions completes the gift, making it a truly memorable present. I’ve tried various themes depending on the occasion – from charming gingham for holidays to bright, cheerful fabrics for birthdays. It's a wonderful way to personalize the gift and add a touch of whimsy.

The possibilities are endless! You can easily adapt the recipe to create different types of cookie mixes, tailoring them to individual preferences. Chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, peanut butter—the options are truly limitless. It's a fantastic opportunity to get creative and personalize each jar to the recipient. This year, I even experimented with adding unique ingredients, like chopped nuts and dried cranberries, for an extra special touch. Imagine the joy on the face of your friends and family as they unwrap this unique, homemade treat – a gift that truly speaks of love and care.

Beyond the personal satisfaction of crafting these delightful gifts, there's a sense of community that comes from sharing this experience. It's a wonderful activity to do with friends, family, or even colleagues. The process of carefully measuring, layering, and decorating the jars becomes a shared experience, creating lasting memories. Plus, it's a great way to teach children about baking and the joy of giving. They can help with the layering, decorating, and even the writing of the recipe card.

This isn't just a gift; it's an invitation to share a delicious experience, a connection to the warmth of homemade treats, and a memory that will last long after the cookies are gone. The simple act of gifting something homemade, something infused with your time and care, speaks volumes. It shows that you thought of them, that you put in the effort, and that you care enough to share something special. It’s a gift that goes beyond the tangible; it's a gift of connection, a gift of time, and a gift of love, all wrapped up in a beautiful jar of cookie mix.

So, this holiday season, or for any special occasion, consider skipping the generic and embracing the personal. Try your hand at creating these homemade cookie mixes in a jar. You'll find it’s a rewarding experience that creates lasting memories and brings a smile to the faces of those you cherish.

Ingredients Used: 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/2 cup white sugar, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 1/2 cup packed brown sugar, 1/4 teaspoon baking powder, 1 cup flaked coconut, 1/2 cup chopped pecans, 3/4 cup butterscotch chips, 1 1/8 cups all-purpose flour, 1 cup high protein crisp rice and wheat cereal.

Step-by-step

    • Layer the ingredients in the order given in a one quart wide mouth canning jar.
    • Firmly pack each ingredient in place. It will be a tight fit, but all ingredients will fit in the jar.
    • Use pinking shears to cut an 8 or 9 inch circle from gingham, calico, or a seasonal fabric.
    • Place the fabric over the wide mouth lid and rim and secure with a rubber band.
    • Tie on a raffia or ribbon bow to cover the rubber band.
    • Attach a card to the ribbon or raffia with the following mixing and baking directions: Empty jar of cookie mix into a large mixing bowl. Add 1/2 cup of butter or margarine, 1 egg, and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla. Use hands to mix the wet and dry ingredients together. When completely blended, roll into large walnut sized balls. Place on unprepared cookie sheets and use the palm of your hand to flatten each cookie ball. Bake at 350 in a preheated oven for 8-10 minutes.
