The best part about this recipe is its simplicity. Forget complicated techniques or obscure ingredients; this recipe is all about showcasing the vibrant, juicy sweetness of fresh blueberries. I remember the first time I made it – a lazy Sunday afternoon, the sun streaming through the kitchen window. The whole process was surprisingly meditative, the gentle simmering and constant stirring a calming rhythm in the midst of a busy week. The aroma that filled my kitchen was intoxicating – a sweet, tangy invitation to a taste of summer. And the final product? Simply divine. The jam’s rich, deep flavor was a perfect complement to my morning toast, a delightful addition to yogurt, and even found its way into some homemade scones (a recipe for another day!).

Beyond the Recipe:

I often find myself reflecting on how this simple recipe connects me to my own family history. My grandmother made the most incredible jams and preserves, and the memory of her busy kitchen, filled with the sweet aroma of simmering fruit, is one of my most cherished childhood memories. This recipe, in its own small way, allows me to connect with that past, to carry on a tradition that brings joy to my own life, and perhaps to others as well. It's more than just a recipe; it's a link to family, to heritage, and to the simple pleasures of life. And for me, that’s a sweet recipe for happiness indeed.

The act of making jam is so much more than just combining ingredients. It’s a process of transformation, of taking something simple – fresh blueberries and sugar – and turning it into something extraordinary. It’s a reminder that even in our fast-paced, often chaotic lives, there's always time for small moments of joy, for simple acts of creation, and for sharing the fruits (pun intended!) of our labor with those we love. And that's a recipe I plan on following for many years to come.

Step-by-step

    • Prepare your jars by boiling the lids, rings and jars in boiling water for 5 minutes.
    • In a wide saucepan or skillet on low-medium heat, add the blueberries and sugar.
    • Stir to combine.
    • Then use your potato masher to smash up the blueberries and release their juices.
    • Turn up the heat to medium, then cook the blueberry mixture until it is gently boiling.
    • Keep cooking, and stirring until the mixture thickens. You must, must stir constantly or your jam will burn. As well the constant stirring will help to prevent the jam from splattering out of the pan.
    • You will likely need to cook the jam for 30 or more minutes.
    • You will know that the jam is ready when the mixture is thick enough to leave an open trail behind the spoon.
    • Remove from heat, and let cool completely before serving.
    • If this jam is too chunky for you, you can use your hand blender to puree it.
    • Enjoy!
