My Perfect Split Top Hot Dog Buns

As a busy working mom, finding time to bake is a luxury. But sometimes, the simplest things bring the most joy. That's why I perfected this recipe for split top hot dog buns – they're quick, easy, and utterly delicious. No more store-bought buns for us! The fluffy texture and perfectly split tops make these buns the star of any backyard barbecue or casual weeknight dinner. The aroma alone is enough to make everyone gather around the table.

The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity. It doesn't require any obscure ingredients or complicated techniques. Everything is readily available at your local grocery store, and the steps are straightforward enough for even a novice baker to master. It's a recipe that celebrates the fundamental joy of home baking; the warmth of the oven, the intoxicating smell of fresh bread, and the satisfaction of creating something delicious from scratch. I particularly love the soft, airy crumb of these buns. They hold their shape beautifully even after being split, making them perfect for your favorite hot dogs, sausages, or even pulled pork. Plus, they're surprisingly versatile! They're just as delicious served slightly toasted with butter, making a simple yet delightful breakfast or snack. This recipe has become a regular in my household, a testament to its ease, flavor, and the joy it brings to mealtimes. The satisfaction of biting into a perfectly baked bun, warm from the oven, is pure bliss.

I've experimented with this recipe over time, adjusting the ingredients slightly to reach this perfect balance of taste and texture. For example, the type of flour can affect the outcome – all-purpose works best for this recipe, providing just the right amount of structure and tenderness. And don’t underestimate the importance of the second rise! It ensures those beautifully split tops and a light, airy interior. One of the biggest surprises was how much my kids enjoyed helping with the process. Measuring ingredients, shaping the buns, even brushing on the melted butter became small family rituals, making the baking experience even more memorable and rewarding. The time spent in the kitchen together, creating something delicious, is just as valuable as the end result itself. Baking, for me, has become a way to reconnect with my family, slow down and appreciate the small things, and create lasting memories.

The secret to perfectly split tops, I've discovered, is a sharp knife and a light hand. Don’t cut too deeply, just enough to create that signature split. The butter adds a beautiful richness and helps to create a golden-brown crust. And the best part? Leftovers (if there are any!) are fantastic toasted the next day! So go ahead, give this recipe a try. I guarantee it will become a new favorite in your home.

Step-by-step

    • Add a 1/2 cup of the flour to the yeast and water and let sit for 10 mins in a stand mixer bowl.
    • Add egg, melted butter, sugar and salt to bowl and whisk together. Add rest of flour and knead on low for 5-6 minutes with dough hook attachment.
    • Transfer ball to lightly floured surface and roll into a smooth ball. Put ball into cleaned mixer bowl with 1-2 teaspoons of olive oil to coat the dough. Cover with foil and place in cool oven and let rise for 2 hours.
    • Remove dough from bowl and on a lightly floured surface, press the air out of the dough while shaping it into a rectangle. Cut dough into 8 equal pieces.
    • Shape pieces into roughly hot dog bun shape, 5-6 inches long. Place onto silicone lined baking sheet 1/4 inch apart. With a sharp knife cut down the center of each roll about 1/8 inch deep.
    • Brush buns with melted butter on all sides. Place in cool oven and let rise for 45 minutes.
    • Bake for 20-25 minutes at 375 degrees.
    • Brush more melted butter on top and let cool completely.
