Chocolate Raisin Bread Pudding

Chocolate Raisin Bread Pudding
I have never been a great fan of bread pudding, but the chocolate version at Cresheim Cottage Cafe, in Philadelphia, is outstanding. The owner wont give me the recipe. Maybe youll have more luck. Any unsweetened cocoa powder will work well, but for the richest, darkest pudding, use Valrhona. Serve this bread pudding with chocolate sauce and whipped cream.

My Unexpected Love Affair with Chocolate Raisin Bread Pudding

I’ve always considered myself more of a savory person. Give me a perfectly seasoned steak over a decadent dessert any day. So, when a friend suggested we try the chocolate raisin bread pudding at Cresheim Cottage Cafe, I was hesitant. I’d had bread pudding before, and let’s just say it wasn’t a memorable experience. It was dense, heavy, and frankly, a bit boring. But my friend insisted, and I’m eternally grateful she did. The moment that warm, gooey, chocolatey goodness hit my tongue, I was a convert. The rich, dark chocolate perfectly complemented the plump raisins, creating a symphony of flavors in my mouth. The texture was incredible - not too dense, not too light, just perfectly balanced. It was a revelation!

The secret, I later learned, lies in the quality of the ingredients. While the cafe owner jealously guards her recipe (and I completely understand – I’d do the same!), I’ve experimented to recreate that magic at home. The key is to use good quality cocoa powder – Valrhona, if you can find it, is truly divine. The difference in richness and depth of flavor is noticeable. And don’t skimp on the cream and milk; the richness is essential for that creamy, indulgent texture. I also found that letting the bread soak for a few minutes before baking is crucial to ensure it absorbs the custard evenly and prevents it from becoming too dry.

Making this bread pudding has become one of my favorite weekend rituals. It’s a wonderful way to use up leftover bread, and the aroma that fills the kitchen as it bakes is absolutely intoxicating. The best part? The faces of my friends and family when I serve them a warm slice. Their expressions of pure delight make all the effort worthwhile. It’s a dish that truly brings people together, sparking conversations and creating lasting memories around a table laden with warm, comforting food. This bread pudding isn’t just a dessert; it’s an experience. It’s a reminder that even the most hesitant of palates can be won over by a perfectly executed dish, and sometimes, the most unexpected culinary adventures lead to the most rewarding discoveries. So, if you're looking for a decadent and surprisingly simple dessert to impress your friends or treat yourself, I highly recommend you give this chocolate raisin bread pudding a try. You might just find yourself falling in love, just like I did.
