A Taste of the Tropics: My Easter Ham

Easter is my favorite holiday. Not just for the religious significance, but for the tradition, the family gatherings, and of course, the food! This year, I decided to step away from the usual roasted chicken and try something a little more adventurous – a Tropical Glazed Ham with Curried Pineapple Chutney. The result? Absolutely spectacular. It was a showstopper centerpiece, and the flavors were so unique and vibrant, everyone raved about it.

I've always loved experimenting in the kitchen, trying new recipes and flavor combinations. This ham recipe wasn't just delicious, it was surprisingly easy to make. The preparation is simple, requiring only common ingredients that I usually keep on hand. The real magic lies in the combination of sweet and savory flavors. The glaze, with its rich mango nectar base, balanced perfectly with the zest of lemon and lime, and the subtle warmth of coriander. It created a complex, yet harmonious flavor profile that complemented the ham beautifully. The chutney added another layer of texture and taste, providing a delightful contrast to the glaze's sweetness.

What truly set this ham apart was the presentation. The carefully scored diamond pattern, studded with cloves, created a visually appealing centerpiece. The golden-brown glaze, glistening under the kitchen lights, made it almost too beautiful to eat (almost!). The aroma alone filled the house with a delicious anticipation, promising a feast to come. It was such a satisfying experience, bringing a touch of exotic flair to a classic Easter dish. The compliments from my family and friends were the icing on the cake, or should I say, the glaze on the ham?

The preparation itself was a pleasant experience. I found myself humming along to my favorite playlist as I carefully scored the ham, creating the decorative diamond pattern. There's something oddly meditative about that process, the rhythmic slicing and careful placement of cloves. Then, the scent of spices simmering on the stovetop added another layer of enjoyment to the cooking process. It felt like creating a culinary work of art, a dish designed to impress and delight.

I wholeheartedly recommend this recipe for anyone looking to add a unique and delicious twist to their Easter celebrations. It's a dish that will be remembered and requested year after year. The combination of sweet, savory, and tangy flavors is a delightful surprise, and the ease of preparation makes it a perfect choice for even busy cooks. Don’t be intimidated by the seemingly exotic ingredients—they are all easily accessible, and the results will be well worth the effort.

Beyond the delicious food, Easter is all about connecting with loved ones, sharing stories, and creating memories. This ham, however, became a central part of our Easter memories. It was more than just a dish; it was a symbol of our shared joy and celebration. The entire experience, from preparing the ham to sharing it with those I love, was enriching and unforgettable.

So, if you're looking to impress your guests and yourself this Easter, give this Tropical Glazed Ham a try. It's a recipe that's both beautiful and delicious, a perfect blend of traditional and innovative. And let me tell you, the leftovers are just as amazing! I repurposed the remaining ham in sandwiches, salads, and even quiches. There's simply no waste with this culinary masterpiece.

Happy Easter, and happy cooking!

Step-by-step

    • Position rack in bottom third of oven and preheat to 350°F. Using sharp knife, cut parallel lines 1 inch apart in fat layer and rind on ham. Cut more lines in crosswise direction, making diamond pattern.
    • Stick 1 whole clove into center of each diamond. Place rack in roasting pan. Place ham on rack. Roast ham 2 hours.
    • Reduce oven temperature to 300°F. Continue to roast ham until golden, about 1 hour.
    • Meanwhile, combine mango nectar and next 6 ingredients in heavy medium saucepan. Bring to simmer over medium heat. Cook until glaze thickens and coats spoon, stirring often, about 14 minutes; set glaze aside.
    • Remove ham from oven. Maintain oven temperature. Using pastry brush, dab all of glaze over ham, being careful not to dislodge crisp diamonds of fat and rind.
    • Return ham to oven. Roast until ham is heated through and glaze is brown, about 35 minutes.
    • Transfer ham to platter; let stand 15 minutes. Spoon chutney into bowl. Slice ham and serve with chutney.
