My Favorite Holiday Treat: Chocolate Orange Fudge

The holidays are a time for traditions, family gatherings, and, of course, delicious treats! And for me, nothing says holiday cheer quite like a batch of homemade fudge. This year, I decided to try a new recipe: Chocolate Orange Fudge. I’ve always been a fan of the classic chocolate fudge, but the addition of orange zest adds a delightful zing that elevates it to a whole new level. It’s the perfect balance of rich, decadent chocolate and bright, citrusy freshness.

What I love most about making fudge is the simple satisfaction of creating something so delicious from scratch. There's something incredibly rewarding about transforming humble ingredients into a sweet, creamy delight. The aroma that fills my kitchen while the fudge simmers is intoxicating – a blend of chocolate and orange that's enough to make anyone's mouth water. And let's be honest, the best part is sharing it with loved ones (or keeping it all to myself… no judgement!).

This particular recipe is wonderfully easy to follow, and even a novice baker like myself could master it without a hitch. The instructions are clear and concise, ensuring a smooth process from start to finish. The result is a fudge that’s wonderfully grainy, boasting a texture that's both rich and satisfying. It's not too sweet, and the orange really shines through, providing a refreshing counterpoint to the deep chocolate flavor.

One of my favorite things about making this fudge is the anticipation. From the moment I start measuring out the ingredients until the final cut into perfect squares, the process is full of delightful anticipation. Each step builds upon the last, creating a culinary journey that culminates in a sweet reward. It’s an activity I deeply enjoy, providing me with a sense of accomplishment and a delicious treat to savor.

The holidays often bring with them a rush of activity, but this fudge recipe is surprisingly manageable, even amidst the chaos. It doesn’t require a lot of fancy equipment, which is a plus for me. I typically use what I have on hand, and it always turns out beautifully. It's the kind of recipe that brings people together, whether you’re sharing it with family, friends, or colleagues. It's a perfect conversation starter, and inevitably leads to happy smiles and joyful moments.

This chocolate orange fudge is more than just a dessert; it’s a symbol of the holiday spirit. The act of making it, the aroma it creates, and the joy of sharing it make it a truly special part of my holiday traditions. So, if you're looking for a simple yet elegant treat to add to your holiday repertoire, I highly recommend giving this recipe a try. You won't be disappointed. And who knows, maybe it'll become your new favorite holiday tradition too!

The combination of rich, dark chocolate and the bright, zesty notes of orange is simply irresistible. I often find myself reaching for another square, even after I've had my fill. The fudge keeps wonderfully well, allowing you to enjoy its deliciousness for days (or weeks!) to come. And what's better than a little festive treat to brighten up a cold winter's day? This is truly a recipe that I look forward to making year after year. Its ease of preparation, coupled with the exceptional taste and the sheer joy of sharing it with others, makes this chocolate orange fudge a truly treasured holiday recipe.

Step-by-step

    • Butter an 8-inch square glass baking dish.
    • In a heavy 2-quart saucepan combine sugar, chocolate, cream, and salt and cook over moderate heat, stirring constantly, until sugar is dissolved and chocolate is melted.
    • Cook mixture, without stirring, until a candy thermometer registers 238°F.
    • Remove pan from heat and add butter and orange peel, swirling pan without stirring.
    • Cool fudge 5 minutes and beat with a wooden spoon until it just begins to lose its gloss (do not overbeat or fudge will seize).
    • Pour fudge immediately into baking dish and cool 15 minutes, or until it begins to harden.
    • Cut fudge into 1-inch squares and cool completely.
    • Fudge may be kept, in layers separated by wax paper in an airtight container lined with wax paper, in a cool dry place 2 weeks.
    • Garnish fudge with candied orange peel slices.
