Cafe Brulot
A New Orleans specialty that combines dark coffee with brandy, citrus and spices, this gets its name from the French words for coffee and burnt brandy. We've added a couple of twists, spiking it with Grand Marnier and topping it with whipped cream.

Café Brulot: A New Orleans Delight

As a busy working mom, finding time for myself is a luxury, not a given. But even amidst the chaos of carpools, deadlines, and school projects, I crave moments of quiet indulgence. That's where the Café Brulot comes in – a little slice of New Orleans magic that I can conjure up in my own kitchen, transforming a hectic evening into something special.

This isn't your average coffee; it's a captivating experience. The rich aroma alone is enough to melt away the day's stresses. The subtle sweetness of the brown sugar dances with the zest of citrus, the warmth of cinnamon, and the intoxicating kick of brandy and Grand Marnier. The flaming brandy adds a dramatic flair, turning the preparation into a mini-performance – perfect for impressing guests or simply treating myself to a touch of extravagance.

The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity. While the final result is elegant and sophisticated, the process itself is surprisingly straightforward. It's a perfect balance of effort and reward. The time spent preparing the drink feels less like a chore and more like a meditative ritual – the gentle simmering, the careful layering of flavors, the anticipation of that first, glorious sip. It’s a welcome break from the constant demands of daily life, a moment to breathe, relax and savor the simple pleasure of a truly exquisite beverage.

I’ve adapted the traditional recipe slightly, adding a touch of Grand Marnier for an extra layer of complexity and topping it with a generous dollop of whipped cream. The creaminess perfectly complements the intense flavors of the coffee and liqueur, creating a harmonious blend that is both comforting and exhilarating. I often serve it after dinner with a good book or while catching up with a friend. It's the perfect way to end a day or start a relaxing evening. It's become a cherished part of my personal routine – a little secret weapon against the everyday grind. Even my kids are starting to ask for "Mommy's fancy coffee", a compliment that warms my heart more than any fancy dessert. This is more than just a recipe; it's a small act of self-care, a reminder that even amidst the chaos of life, there’s always room for a touch of magic.

Beyond the Recipe: The Café Brulot is more than just a drink; it’s a story, a tradition, a moment of connection. The act of preparing it, the sharing of it, and the savoring of it are all part of the experience. It’s a reminder that slowing down, even for a few moments, and enjoying the simple pleasures in life is essential. In a world that often feels rushed and overwhelming, the Café Brulot offers a welcome respite – a small, fragrant escape that leaves me feeling refreshed, re-energized, and ready to face whatever the day (or night) may bring.

Step-by-step

    • Beat cream with 2 tablespoons Grand Marnier to stiff peaks in medium bowl. Cover and refrigerate up to 3 hours.
    • Combine sugar, citrus peels, cinnamon, cloves and remaining 1/2 cup Grand Marnier in heavy large skillet. Stir over medium-low heat until mixture begins to simmer. Simmer 3 minutes. Remove from heat and let stand 30 minutes.
    • Return sugar mixture to simmer over medium heat. Pour mixture into large decorative heat-proof bowl. Pour brandy into heavy large saucepan. Set over medium heat; warm to lukewarm. Ignite with long match. Pour flaming brandy over sugar mixture in bowl. Gradually pour coffee down side of bowl (flames will subside).
    • Bring to table. Ladle coffee into mugs, leaving peel and spices in bowl. Serve with whipped cream.
