Honey BBQ Wings: A Delicious KFC Copycat Recipe

My Unexpected Culinary Adventure: Honey BBQ Wings

As a busy working mom, finding time to cook is always a challenge. Weeknights are a whirlwind of school pick-ups, homework battles, and the ever-present dinner dilemma. My family, however, has a weakness for delicious, crispy chicken wings. And let’s be honest, sometimes the convenience of take-out wins. But take-out gets expensive, and I felt like I was always compromising on quality and ingredients.

My eldest son, recently relocated to the UK, especially misses the taste of KFC wings. This longing sparked a mission – to create a homemade version that would satisfy his cravings and ours. I embarked on a recipe quest, spending hours scouring the internet for the perfect balance of flavor and simplicity. My search ultimately led me to a “KFC copycat” recipe, promising that magical blend of sweet, smoky, and savory that we all love. Now, I'm a firm believer that sometimes the best recipes are the ones that are tweaked and adapted to your own preferences. This recipe proved to be no exception.

The original recipe was relatively straightforward but lacked that certain something. I experimented with different ratios of honey and molasses, adjusting the spices to suit our palate. One of the biggest challenges was the elusive liquid smoke. I couldn't find it in my local stores – a minor setback that surprisingly didn’t hinder the final result! The wings turned out incredibly flavorful, even without the liquid smoke. The crispy skin, tender meat, and perfectly balanced sweet and savory sauce were a resounding success. The kids devoured them in minutes. My husband even declared them better than KFC – high praise indeed!

This recipe, therefore, is not just about creating a KFC copycat. It is about a journey of culinary experimentation and adaptation. It is about finding joy in the kitchen, even amidst the chaos of everyday life. It is about creating memories and satisfying cravings. The aroma of these wings cooking wafts through the house, filling it with a comforting warmth that echoes beyond the simple act of making dinner. It's a delicious taste of home, made even more special by the family gathered around the table, savoring each bite. It's about embracing the imperfections and celebrating the successes in the kitchen—a space where love, laughter, and delicious food come together.

Beyond the family aspect, this recipe has become a testament to my personal growth as a cook. I've learned to trust my instincts, to experiment without fear, and to discover that sometimes the most unexpected detours lead to the most satisfying results. It's a reminder that cooking is an evolving art, constantly shaped by our experiences and preferences.

So, if you’re looking for a delicious and surprisingly easy way to satisfy your chicken wing cravings, this Honey BBQ recipe is a must-try. It’s more than just a meal; it’s an experience, a testament to the power of family and the simple joys of home-cooked food. Enjoy!

Step-by-step

    • Combine the sauce ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until ingredients are well-combined and bring to a boil. Then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes.
    • As sauce is simmering, heat up 6 to 8 cups of oil in a deep fryer set to 350 degrees. Combine the beaten egg with the milk in a small bowl. In another small bowl, combine the flour, salt, pepper and MSG.
    • When oil is hot, dip each wing first in the flour mixture, then into the milk and egg mixture, and back into the flour. Arrange wings on a plate until each one is breaded.
    • Fry the wings in the oil for 9 to 12 minutes or until light, golden brown. If you have a small fryer, you may wish to fry 10 of the wings at a time. Drain on paper towels or a rack.
    • When the sauce is done, brush the entire surface of each wing with a light coating of sauce. Serve immediately.
