This is my absolute favorite lasagna recipe. My family frequently asks for it. I also make it as a Baked Ziti recipe, substituting the lasagna noodles for ziti noodles and everything else stays the same.

My Family's Favorite Lasagna

My Go-To Comfort Food: Lasagna

As a busy working mom, time is a precious commodity. Weeknights are often a whirlwind of homework help, soccer practice pick-ups, and the ever-present challenge of getting a healthy and satisfying meal on the table. That’s why I rely heavily on recipes that are both delicious and relatively easy to prepare. My lasagna recipe fits the bill perfectly. It's a crowd-pleaser that's surprisingly simple to make, even on the busiest of days. The comforting aroma of simmering sauce and baking cheese is enough to melt away the stresses of the day, and the taste? Well, let's just say it’s a guaranteed hit with my family. They practically beg for it every week, and I don’t blame them! The rich, savory meat sauce layered with tender pasta and creamy cheese is simply irresistible. It's the ultimate comfort food, perfect for a chilly evening or a family get-together.

This recipe is more than just a meal; it's a tradition. I’ve adapted it over the years, tweaking it here and there to perfection. It's evolved with my family, becoming a symbol of warmth and togetherness. The process of layering the ingredients, the anticipation as it bakes in the oven, and the joy of sharing the finished product with loved ones – it’s these moments that make this lasagna so special. Beyond my family, I often bring this lasagna to potlucks and gatherings. It’s a dish that always gets rave reviews and disappears quickly. It's a testament to its simple elegance and satisfying flavour profile. More than just a delicious meal, it’s a culinary hug in a dish, a promise of warmth and contentment.

Beyond the Recipe: While this lasagna recipe is a star in my kitchen, I've experimented with variations too. Sometimes I swap the ground beef for turkey or chicken for a lighter option. I’ve even tried using different types of cheese, exploring the nuances of various blends. The possibilities are endless, and that’s part of the fun! I encourage you to experiment and make it your own. Add vegetables, change up the spices, or try different pasta shapes - the core of the recipe remains simple enough to handle numerous adaptations. What truly matters is the time spent in the kitchen, the love you put into the preparation, and the joy of sharing a wonderful meal with those you care about. Lasagna is more than just a recipe; it's a testament to the power of simple ingredients, transformed through creativity and love into something truly special.

Tips for Success:

  • Don't overcook the noodles: Slightly undercooked noodles will finish cooking nicely in the oven, preventing mushiness.
  • Use quality ingredients: The flavor of this lasagna really depends on the quality of your ingredients, so don't skimp on the cheese or the tomato sauce!
  • Let it rest: Allowing the lasagna to rest before serving helps it firm up and makes it easier to slice.
  • Make it ahead: You can assemble the lasagna a day ahead and bake it the next day. Just cover it tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate.

This lasagna is more than just a recipe; it's a story, a memory, a gathering of loved ones around a table filled with warmth and deliciousness. I hope you enjoy it as much as my family does.

Step-by-step

    • Cook ground beef and sausage in a large saucepan. Drain, set aside.
    • In same pan, warm the olive oil over medium-low heat. Add garlic, allow to sizzle. Add basil and Italian seasoning; cook for 1-2 minutes. Add tomato sauce, stir. Add meat.
    • Reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer at least 30 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste.
    • Meanwhile, fill a large pasta pot with water and add a large pinch of salt. Bring to a boil. Cook noodles according to package directions. Drain noodles and add drop of olive oil to prevent sticking.
    • In a large bowl, mix 4 oz. of the Parmesan-Romano grated cheese blend, 5 oz. shredded Parmesan, 12 oz. Ricotta, and 8 oz. Mozzarella.
    • Slightly oil a 13"x9" baking dish. Spread a very thin layer of sauce over bottom of dish.
    • Layer 4 noodles, 1/3 of sauce, and 1/2 of the cheese mixture. Repeat until dish is full. On last layer, spread 1/3 of sauce and sprinkle generously with Parmesan-Romano grated cheese blend and the remaining 3 oz. of shredded Parmesan.
    • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
    • Cover with foil and bake 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake 15 minutes more or until bubbly. Broil until top is browned. Let lasagna stand 10 minutes before serving.
