My Christmas Tradition: A Sweet and Tangy Galette

Christmas is a time for family, laughter, and, of course, delicious food! This year, I decided to put a unique twist on the classic fruitcake, creating a beautiful and flavorful Christmas galette. It’s become a new family favorite, and I'm thrilled to share this recipe and my Christmas baking experience with you. Forget dry, dense fruitcakes; this galette is all about a perfect balance of sweet, tangy, and buttery goodness. The flaky, golden crust encases a vibrant mix of apples, pears, and dried fruits, beautifully spiced with ginger and a touch of orange marmalade. The aroma alone is enough to transport you to a cozy Christmas kitchen filled with warmth and cheer.

The process of making this galette is incredibly rewarding. From the moment you start assembling the crust – feeling the cool butter and shortening blend into the flour – to the final moments when you brush the golden-brown crust with a luscious marmalade glaze, every step is filled with holiday magic. It’s a perfect project for a quiet afternoon, a comforting activity as the holiday rush sets in. I always put on some festive music, and this baking becomes a lovely way to unwind. I have fond memories of my grandmother making similar treats; this recipe brings back all those sensations of a warm, loving Christmas. The best part? It’s incredibly versatile. Feel free to experiment with your favorite dried fruits; cranberries, figs, or even chopped dates would make delightful additions.

The galette itself is a showstopper. Its rustic, free-form elegance makes it a stunning centerpiece for any Christmas gathering, whether it's a small family affair or a larger celebration. I’ve served it both warm, meltingly delicious with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and at room temperature, its flavors mellowing and enriching with time. The contrasts—the crisp crust against the soft, spiced fruit filling, the sweetness balanced by the tartness of the apples and pears—create a symphony of flavors that will linger in your memory long after the last slice is gone. I served it at our family Christmas party last year, and it was the first thing to disappear from the dessert table!

This Christmas galette isn’t just a dessert; it’s an experience. It’s a chance to slow down, embrace the simple joys of baking, and create something beautiful and delicious to share with loved ones. The aroma filling your kitchen as it bakes, the satisfaction of crafting something from scratch, the joy of seeing everyone's faces light up as they taste the first bite—these are the true gifts of the season. And, if you're looking for a gift to give, a homemade Christmas galette is a truly thoughtful and heartwarming present.

So, gather your ingredients, put on your favorite holiday playlist, and let the magic of Christmas baking begin. This recipe is more than just a dessert; it’s a piece of tradition, a warm hug in a beautiful, golden crust. I hope it brings you as much joy as it has brought me and my family. Merry Christmas!

Step-by-step

    • Mix flour, sugar, and salt in processor. Add butter and shortening; pulse until coarse meal forms.
    • Add 2 tablespoons ice water; pulse until moist clumps form, adding more water by teaspoonfuls if dry.
    • Gather dough into ball; flatten into disk and wrap in plastic. Chill 2 hours.
    • DO AHEAD: Can be made 1 day ahead. Keep chilled. Let stand at room temperature 30 minutes before continuing.
    • Preheat oven to 425°F. Mix apples, pears, dried fruit, 3 tablespoons marmalade, 3 tablespoons sugar, fresh ginger, and ground ginger in large bowl to coat.
    • Roll crust out between 2 large sheets of waxed paper to 13-inch round. Place sheet of parchment on rimless baking sheet; spray parchment with nonstick spray.
    • Remove top sheet of waxed paper from crust. Invert crust onto parchment, then peel off second sheet of waxed paper.
    • Spoon filling onto crust, leaving 2-inch border around edges.
    • Fold crust border up and over filling, folding and pleating occasionally.
    • Brush crust edges lightly with water. Sprinkle damp crust with remaining 1 tablespoon sugar.
    • Bake galette 50 minutes. Reduce heat to 400°F. Loosely cover filling with small sheet of foil.
    • Bake until crust is deep golden and filling is tender, about 20 minutes longer.
    • Slide knife or offset spatula under galette to loosen from parchment. Cool galette slightly on sheet on rack.
    • Heat remaining 4 tablespoons marmalade and 1 tablespoon water in small saucepan over medium heat, stirring often, until marmalade melts.
    • Spoon marmalade glaze over filling.
    • Serve galette warm or at room temperature with vanilla ice cream or sweetened whipped cream.
