Making tortillas from scratch can be a lot of fun, but it can also be a little frustrating. My eleven-year-old son, Jordan, rolls his tortillas out into perfect circles, but mine end up looking like the state of Texas! Dont give up if they dont come out right on the first try. Once you get the hang of them, everyone will be asking for more. These will keep, well wrapped, for up to 1 week in the refrigerator and up to 2 months in the freezer.

Homemade Flour Tortillas: A Culinary Adventure

As a busy working mom, finding time to cook is always a challenge. But there’s something deeply satisfying about making things from scratch, particularly when it involves a beloved family recipe. That’s where these homemade flour tortillas come in. They’re a staple in our house, bridging the gap between quick weeknight meals and the warmth of home-cooked goodness.

The first time I attempted these tortillas, I’ll admit, it was a bit of a disaster. My tortillas resembled more abstract art than perfect circles. But I persisted, fuelled by a desire to provide my family with wholesome, delicious food, and also a healthy dose of stubbornness. The beauty of this recipe is its simplicity. The ingredients are few, readily available, and the process, while initially daunting, becomes second nature with practice. Before long, you'll be creating perfect, golden-brown tortillas like a seasoned pro.

What makes this recipe especially unique is its versatility. It’s the perfect foundation for countless dishes. I often use these tortillas to make tacos for a quick and easy dinner. The kids love customizing their tacos with different fillings, making it a fun and interactive meal for the whole family. But the possibilities extend far beyond tacos. These tortillas can be transformed into quesadillas, enchiladas, or even simply enjoyed with some delicious dips and toppings.

Beyond the convenience, making tortillas from scratch is a wonderful opportunity to connect with my heritage and culinary traditions. It’s a skill that has been passed down through generations, a legacy I'm proud to continue with my own children. The process is therapeutic as well; the rhythmic rolling of the dough, the satisfying sizzle on the griddle—it’s a mindful act that connects me to the food I’m creating. It’s more than just cooking; it’s an experience.

The aroma that fills the kitchen as the tortillas cook is simply divine—warm, earthy, slightly sweet. It’s an aroma that instantly evokes feelings of comfort and home. It's the kind of aroma that makes my family gather around the kitchen table, eager to taste the fruits of my labor. And let me tell you, the taste is just as comforting as the smell. The tortillas are soft, pliable, and subtly sweet, with a hint of warmth from the griddle. They have a texture that's hard to replicate with store-bought tortillas; they possess a certain soul.

The time invested in making these tortillas is a small price to pay for the unparalleled flavour and satisfaction they provide. And while they may not be the fastest option, the process is inherently rewarding, a testament to the value of handmade, wholesome food. I encourage you to try it; the process is therapeutic, and the taste is unbeatable. Once you master the art of tortilla making, you’ll never want to go back to store-bought ones.

I often make a double batch and freeze half for future use. This allows me to always have fresh tortillas on hand, a true lifesaver on busy weeknights. The process of freezing them is straightforward; simply wrap them well and store them in a freezer-safe bag or container. They defrost quickly and maintain their texture and flavor. Having a stash in the freezer means quick and healthy meals are always within reach.

So, take the plunge. Give these homemade flour tortillas a try. Embrace the slight imperfections, the moments of frustration (they’re part of the journey!), and most importantly, savor the delicious outcome. It's a recipe that goes beyond the simple act of making tortillas; it's about connecting with food, family, and the joy of creating something special from scratch.

Whether you are a seasoned cook or a novice in the kitchen, this recipe is accessible and rewarding. Don't let the fear of imperfection hold you back. Remember, the most important ingredient in any recipe is love, and that's something these tortillas certainly have in abundance.

As a bonus tip, get your kids involved! It's a great way to teach them about cooking, food, and family traditions. My son, Jordan, now a culinary whiz, delights in making tortillas, and I am truly proud of how it's brought us closer as family.

Step-by-step

    • Combine the flour, salt, and baking powder in a large bowl. Add the shortening and hot water, mixing until a soft dough forms.
    • Divide the dough into 16 pieces and shape each into a ball (these are called testales). On a floured surface, using a floured rolling pin, roll out each ball to a 6-inch circle.
    • Heat a griddle until hot. Place a tortilla on the griddle and cook until the bottom is lightly browned in spots, 1 to 2 minutes; the tortilla will puff up. Turn and cook until lightly browned in spots on the second side. Place in a towel-lined basket and cover with the towel to keep warm while you cook the remaining tortillas. Serve immediately.
    • For extra flavor and crunch, add 1 cup finely chopped pecans to the dough, mixing thoroughly.
