Bourbon Cake Balls

Bourbon Cake Balls
Bourbon Cake Balls
This recipe, developed by my husband, is based upon the basic Cake Ball recipe and therefore, different than the traditional Bourbon Ball recipe. If I may be so bold as to say, they are tastier and even easier to prepare than the traditional recipe.

Bourbon Cake Balls: A Surprisingly Simple Treat

A Sweet Escape: My Husband's Bourbon Cake Balls

Life can be hectic, juggling work, family, and everything in between. Sometimes, a little indulgence is exactly what you need to recharge and reconnect. For me, that often comes in the form of a delicious dessert, something sweet and satisfying that melts away the stress of the day. And recently, that sweet escape has been my husband's incredible Bourbon Cake Balls.

Now, before you conjure up images of elaborate baking projects and hours spent in the kitchen, let me assure you, these are surprisingly simple to make. They're based on a basic cake ball recipe, but with a boozy twist that elevates them far beyond the ordinary. My husband perfected this recipe, and honestly, I think they're even better – and easier – than traditional bourbon balls. The secret? A little bourbon magic and a whole lot of love.

The beauty of these cake balls lies in their versatility. They're perfect for a cozy night in, a casual gathering with friends, or even a sophisticated dessert for a special occasion. The rich chocolate coating, combined with the subtly sweet and nutty cake, and the hint of bourbon, creates a symphony of flavors that's hard to resist. And let's not forget the satisfying crunch of the pecan halves, the perfect finishing touch.

I often find myself making these cake balls when I need a small project to unwind. The process is therapeutic, almost meditative. The careful measuring, the gentle mixing, the satisfying act of rolling the dough into perfect little spheres – it’s a calming ritual. And the end result? A tray of delectable treats that bring a smile to my face and a warmth to my heart. Each bite transports me back to the joy of creating something special, a little piece of homemade happiness.

Beyond the individual pleasure of making them, these Bourbon Cake Balls also become a source of joy to share. Presenting a plate of these gorgeous treats to friends or family is a simple yet profound gesture of care. It’s a way of saying, "I took time to make something special just for you." The appreciative smiles and happy sighs that follow are the ultimate reward.

So, whether you're a seasoned baker or a kitchen novice, I urge you to give these Bourbon Cake Balls a try. They're not just a delicious dessert; they're a delightful experience, a small act of self-care that blossoms into a sweet moment of sharing and connection.

These are more than just cake balls; they are a little taste of happiness, carefully crafted and lovingly shared. They're a reminder that even the simplest things in life, done with intention and care, can bring immense joy.

The beautiful thing about baking – or any act of culinary creation – is the ability to personalize. You can adapt the recipe to your own preferences, using different types of nuts, chocolate, or even experimenting with various liquors (always within legal limits, of course!). Don’t be afraid to get creative, to have fun with it, and to let your own personality shine through in your baking. That, my friends, is the true essence of homemade goodness.

So, gather your ingredients, put on some music, and embrace the joy of creating these delicious Bourbon Cake Balls. They're more than just a dessert; they're an experience. And who knows, maybe they’ll become your new favorite way to unwind and reconnect with yourself and those you love.

Step-by-step

    • Soak nuts in Bourbon while you bake and cool the cake.
    • Bake the yellow cake mix in a 9x13 cake pan as directed on the box. Allow to cool.
    • Break it up into the bowl of your KitchenAid mixer.
    • With the paddle on a slow speed, add the nuts and Bourbon, as well as the entire tub of icing. Slow, so you don’t whip it out all over your kitchen - trust me on this one!
    • Allow to mix completely. This will have a moist, pasty consistency and will look somewhat unattractive.
    • Spread this mixture back into the cake pan from whence it came. Chill well in the fridge, two to three hours. It will be somewhat firm to touch when chilled properly.
    • With a sharp knife, cut into seven rows by nine rows, to ultimately make 63 Bourbon Balls.
    • Using a fork, pull each cube out of the pan and roll it into a sphere with your hands.
    • Place each sphere on a wax paper (or parchment) lined cookie sheet. It will actually take several sheets, probably three or four. Don't let the spheres touch.
    • Chill again in the fridge for a couple more hours.
    • After the spheres are chilled, prepare your favorite chocolate bark as directed.
    • NOTE: Prepare to work quickly and uninterruptedly at this point. You will want room for the cookie sheets to be placed next to the dip. You will return the dipped spheres to the wax papered cookie sheets, so keep the wax paper intact on the cookie sheet. Have your toothpicks and pecan halves at the ready.
    • Using a toothpick, dip each sphere (one at a time) into the coating, allow excess to drip off and place carefully back onto the waxed paper cookie sheet. Again, don't allow the spheres to touch each other.
    • QUICKLY place a pecan half on top of the freshly dipped sphere and press down a bit to help it adhere to the Bourbon Ball. This will also serve to cover the unsightly toothpick hole.
    • Allow to chill in the fridge. You want the coating to be firm.
    • If you are so inclined, place the Bourbon Balls on little cupcake papers and package in boxes. Alternatively, you can just eat them right off the cookie sheet and pass out under the kitchen table. It is completely up to you.
