Homemade Dulce de Leche: A Sweet Treat for Every Occasion

As a busy working mom, time is my most precious commodity. Finding ways to create delicious meals and treats without sacrificing hours in the kitchen is a constant challenge. That's why I've fallen in love with the versatility of dulce de leche. It's incredibly simple to make, yet elevates so many desserts and even savory dishes. This sweet caramel spread is a game-changer, adding a touch of elegance and rich flavor to everything from ice cream to toast.

The beauty of dulce de leche is its adaptability. There are countless variations, from the classic method of simmering milk and sugar for hours, to the surprisingly easy oven method using sweetened condensed milk. The oven method is my personal favorite; it requires minimal hands-on time, allowing me to multitask while the magic happens. Simply pop the can of sweetened condensed milk in the oven and let it do its thing! The result is the same delicious, creamy caramel – a perfect reward after a long day.

I often make a large batch and keep it in the refrigerator. It lasts for weeks, so I always have it on hand for impromptu treats. A spoonful stirred into my morning coffee, a dollop swirled into my yogurt, or spread generously on a piece of toast – the possibilities are endless. It's also a fantastic addition to baking. I've used it as a filling for cakes, cookies, and even as a glaze for muffins. It's a true kitchen staple that adds a unique depth of flavour to any dish.

Beyond its culinary uses, making dulce de leche is a wonderfully rewarding experience. It’s a simple process that yields impressive results, reminding me of simpler times spent in the kitchen with my grandmother. The aroma that fills the house as the milk simmers and caramelizes is truly intoxicating, transporting me back to those cherished memories. And the best part? The homemade version tastes infinitely better than anything you could buy from a store.

I encourage you to try both methods and see which one best suits your lifestyle. Whether you have hours to spare for the traditional stovetop approach or prefer the convenience of the oven method, the delicious result is the same. Once you've tasted homemade dulce de leche, you'll never go back to store-bought again. It's a sweet, simple joy that perfectly encapsulates the heart of home cooking.

So go ahead, give it a try. You won’t regret it. And trust me, your family and friends will thank you for it.

    • Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla.
    • Transfer to a bowl to cool. Makes about 1 1/2 cups.
    • Heat oven to 425°F with rack in middle.
    • Pour the contents of 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk into a 9-inch deep-dish pie plate and cover tightly with foil.

    • Bake milk in middle of oven 45 minutes.
    • Check water level and add additional, if necessary, then continue to bake 45 minutes more, or until milk is thick and brown.
