Delicata Squash Sformato
A sformato is essentially a souffle that doesnt rise because there isnt any air or egg white whipped into itfoolproof! I serve it in place of mashed potatoes, since it has a great flavor without an excess of butter and cream. If I have people over, Ill bake it in individual gratin dishes with a few fresh thyme leaves on top for presentations sake. Delicata squash has a flavor similar to that of butternut, but the skin is much thinneredible, in most casesand the squash is more delicate overall (hence the name). The flesh of a butternut or acorn squash would be a fine substitute. Cooking with squash in the fall and early winter months will yield the best results with this recipe. I find that out of season the squash become a bit waterlogged. You can do everything but bake the sformato in advance. Bring the dish to room temperature before baking.

My Simple Delicata Squash Sformato: A Weeknight Delight

As a busy working mom, finding time to cook delicious and healthy meals can feel like a Herculean task. But I've learned that simplicity is key, and this Delicata Squash Sformato is a perfect example. It's elegant enough for company, yet straightforward enough for a busy weeknight. The best part? It's incredibly flavorful and satisfying, leaving everyone feeling nourished and happy.

I discovered this recipe a while ago, and it's quickly become a staple in our home. The delicate sweetness of the squash pairs beautifully with the creamy cheese and subtle herbs. The texture is wonderfully smooth and comforting, almost like a sophisticated mashed potato alternative. Forget the extra butter and cream – this dish is naturally rich and decadent without all the extra calories.

One of the things I love most about this recipe is its versatility. Sometimes I make a large batch in a single baking dish for a family dinner. Other times, I'll prepare individual portions in small ramekins for a more elegant presentation when guests are over. A sprinkle of fresh thyme on top adds a touch of sophistication, but it’s entirely optional. The beauty of this dish lies in its adaptability to different occasions and serving styles.

Beyond the Recipe: Embracing Simplicity in the Kitchen

My approach to cooking has evolved over the years. Early on, I felt pressured to create elaborate, time-consuming meals. But as my life became busier, I realized that simple doesn't have to mean boring. In fact, some of the most satisfying meals are the ones that require minimal effort but deliver maximum flavor.

This sformato is a testament to that philosophy. The ingredients are readily available, the preparation is straightforward, and the results are truly impressive. It's a recipe that allows me to connect with my family over a delicious, healthy meal without sacrificing precious time.

Tips for Success:

  • Choosing the Right Squash: Delicata squash is ideal for its delicate flavor and thin, edible skin. However, butternut or acorn squash can be used as a substitute.
  • Seasonal Eating: For the best results, use squash that's in season (fall and early winter). Out-of-season squash can sometimes be watery.
  • Make Ahead: You can prepare the squash mixture ahead of time and bake it just before serving. This is a great option for meal prepping or entertaining.
  • Presentation Matters: While the sformato is delicious on its own, don't underestimate the power of presentation. A little garnish can elevate the dish from simple to spectacular.

Beyond the Dinner Table:

This recipe isn't just about creating a delicious meal; it's about making time for myself and my family. In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in the demands of work and daily life. However, creating a simple, healthy meal together is a way to reconnect and unwind. It's a moment of shared joy and connection, a reminder that amidst the chaos, there's always time for something nourishing, both for the body and the soul.

So, next time you're short on time but craving something delicious and comforting, I encourage you to give this Delicata Squash Sformato a try. You'll be surprised at how simple it is to create a truly satisfying and memorable meal.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Happy cooking!

Step-by-step

    • Preheat the oven to 400°F.
    • Cut the squash in half lengthwise, remove the seeds, and pierce a few holes in the skin. Place the squash cut side down in a glass baking dish and roast in the oven until soft, 40 to 45 minutes. The timing may vary, so keep an eye on it. You want a few brown blisters and to be able to pierce it easily with a fork. Set aside and let cool.
    • Put the crème fraîche, Jack cheese, thyme, salt, and pepper in a bowl and stir to combine.
    • Once the squash is cool enough to handle, scoop the flesh away from the skin and put it in a bowl. Add the maple syrup and balsamic vinegar and mash the squash until smooth. Add the cheese mixture and stir to combine. Add the egg and nutmeg, giving the mixture a final stir.
    • Grease an 8 by 8-inch baking dish on all sides and pour in the squash mixture. Turn the oven down to 375°F and bake until brown spots start to show on top, 30 to 40 minutes. Allow it to rest for 10 minutes before serving.
