Stacy's Quick & Cheap Spaghetti: A Weeknight Family Favorite

As a busy mom, I'm always on the lookout for quick, easy, and affordable meals that the whole family will devour. This spaghetti recipe has become a staple in our home, evolving over the years to suit our tastes and busy schedules. It’s so versatile; we can easily adapt it based on what’s in the pantry, and it's perfect for those nights when you need dinner on the table fast.

The best part? It's incredibly forgiving! Feel free to experiment with different types of meat—ground beef works just as well as turkey—or add your favorite vegetables. One of my kids isn’t a fan of mushrooms, so sometimes I leave them out, and nobody notices a difference. The key is the simple, flavorful tomato-based sauce that brings everything together. This recipe easily makes enough leftovers for lunch the next day, which is a huge bonus in our household! We often have it for two or three nights running. The kids don't complain – in fact they specifically request it.

The secret weapon in this dish is the pre-made spaghetti seasoning packet. It eliminates the need for a lot of extra measuring and fuss, adding just the right amount of flavor to the sauce without any added salt. I truly never add any additional salt, it has more than enough, I find it gives a really good balanced flavor to the overall dish. I've tried making my own seasoning blend before, but the pre-made packet always seems to hit the mark better for me. Of course if you prefer to use your own blend feel free, that is the beauty of this recipe, its easy to adapt to what you have on hand.

Another tip for making this even quicker? I often cook the pasta while the sauce is simmering. That way, everything is ready almost simultaneously. I also love serving this with a side of garlic Texas toast. It's a simple addition, but it really elevates the entire meal. The toasted bread complements the rich tomato sauce perfectly, and provides a nice contrast in textures.

This recipe is more than just a quick weeknight dinner; it's a testament to the power of simple ingredients and adaptable cooking. It’s a dish that has brought my family together for years, and I hope it becomes a cherished part of your family’s traditions, too. Enjoy!

Variations to consider:

  • Add other vegetables: Bell peppers, onions, zucchini, or spinach would all be delicious additions to the sauce.
  • Spice it up: A pinch of red pepper flakes would add a nice kick.
  • Make it vegetarian: Substitute the meat with lentils or chickpeas for a hearty vegetarian option.
  • Use different pasta: While angel hair is our favorite, this recipe also works well with spaghetti, linguine, or even penne.
  • Add some fresh herbs: A sprinkle of fresh basil or parsley at the end adds a burst of fresh flavor.

This recipe is a testament to the simplicity and deliciousness that can be achieved with minimal effort and readily available ingredients. It is a perfect example of how delicious home-cooked meals don't have to take hours to create. With a little creativity and adaptation, this recipe can easily be modified to fit your family's preferences and dietary needs. Embrace the simplicity, savor the flavor, and enjoy the time you save knowing dinner will be on the table quickly, easily, and deliciously!

Step-by-step

    • Cook the turkey meat in a pan, drain and put it into a crock pot.
    • Add the tomato sauce, paste, seasoning, tomatoes, and mushrooms.
    • Stir well.
    • I never add any salt because the seasoning package usually has enough.
    • Cook for 1.5 hours.
    • For a faster version, put it on the stovetop and cook on medium-high heat for about 30 minutes (watch it...it will bubble).
    • Cook angel hair pasta according to the package directions.
    • I eat mine al dente, so it only takes 5 minutes. I usually cook it 5 minutes before we sit down to eat.
    • After draining the pasta, add olive oil and toss to prevent sticking.
    • Top with the spaghetti sauce.
    • Add a piece of garlic Texas toast (5 minutes in the oven or toaster).
