My Simple, Flavorful Chicken Broth Recipe

As a busy working mom, time is my most precious commodity. Finding quick and easy ways to prepare healthy, delicious meals is a constant quest. That's why I've perfected this simple chicken broth recipe. It’s perfect for everything from soups and stews to sauces and even just a warm, comforting drink on a cold evening. The best part? It's incredibly easy to make, even when you're juggling work, kids, and everything in between. I adapted this recipe from an old family cookbook, adding carrots for a bit of extra sweetness and nutrients. The results are consistently delicious, and the leftover chicken is perfect for salads or sandwiches.

This recipe is my go-to when I need a quick and flavorful base for various dishes. I often double the recipe and freeze half for future use, saving me time and effort down the road. It's also a great way to use up leftover chicken, reducing food waste and maximizing the flavor of your meals. The slow cooker does most of the work, so it requires minimal hands-on time. Once the broth is done, I typically strain it, skim off any excess fat, and store it in airtight containers in the refrigerator or freezer. The chicken, once cooled, is easily deboned and can be stored separately for later use in other recipes.

Why this recipe works: Simplicity is key! This recipe uses readily available ingredients and a method that's easy to follow, even for beginners. It’s adaptable too; feel free to adjust the herbs and vegetables to suit your taste. I sometimes add a few sprigs of thyme or rosemary for an extra layer of flavor, and sometimes use leftover vegetable scraps to add depth to the broth. This recipe is incredibly versatile and easily customizable to your preferences.

Tips for success: Using a slow cooker ensures that the chicken is cooked perfectly tender, creating a rich and flavorful broth. Remember to let the broth cool before skimming off the fat. This step is crucial for creating a cleaner, less greasy broth. Proper storage is also important for preserving the flavor and quality of the broth. Storing it in airtight containers in the refrigerator or freezer helps to maintain freshness and prevent freezer burn.

Beyond the basics: This basic chicken broth recipe is a blank canvas for your culinary creativity. Consider adding other vegetables like leeks, parsnips, or even mushrooms to enrich the flavor profile. A splash of white wine or apple cider vinegar can also add an extra layer of complexity. Experiment with different herbs and spices to find your perfect combination. The possibilities are truly endless!

This recipe is more than just a recipe; it's a testament to the power of simplicity and the joy of creating something delicious from scratch, even amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It's a recipe that reflects my own philosophy of cooking: making the most of what I have, using fresh, high-quality ingredients, and creating nourishing and flavorful meals for my family. It’s a recipe that makes me feel good, both in the process and the delicious results. I hope it brings you the same joy it brings me.

Serving suggestions: This versatile chicken broth is perfect for a variety of dishes. Use it as a base for soups, stews, and sauces, or simply enjoy a warm mugful on a chilly evening. It's equally delicious used in rice dishes, gravies, or as a flavorful addition to your favorite casseroles. The possibilities are truly endless.

Storage: Store leftover broth in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

This is more than a recipe. It’s a time-saver, a flavor enhancer, and a little bit of homemade comfort in a busy world.

Step-by-step

    • In a 3.5-, 4- or 5-quart crock pot, combine cut-up chicken, celery, carrots, onion, parsley, bay leaf, salt, thyme or marjoram, and pepper. Add water.
    • Cover; cook on low for 7-10 hours or on high for 3.5-5 hours or until chicken is very tender and well done.
    • Remove chicken from cooker. Strain broth through a large sieve or colander lined with 2 layers of cheesecloth. Discard solids in cheesecloth.
    • If using broth right away, skim off fat. Or if storing for later, chill broth in a bowl for 6 hours. Lift off fat. Pour broth into an airtight container, discarding the residue at the bottom of the bowl. Seal. Chill in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
    • When chicken are cool enough to handle, remove meat from bones. Discard skin and bones. Place meat in an airtight container, seal. Chill in the fridge up to 3 days or freeze up to 3 months.
