My Sweet Escape: Homemade Vanilla Vodka Cherries

The kitchen has always been my sanctuary. A place where I can escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and lose myself in the rhythmic chopping, the fragrant steam, and the satisfying clink of jars sealing shut. This particular recipe, my Vanilla Vodka Cherries, is more than just a preserved treat; it's a testament to slowing down, savoring the process, and creating something beautiful and delicious from simple ingredients. It's a journey that takes me back to simpler times, reminding me of the joy of creating something tangible and rewarding.

The idea sparked one crisp autumn afternoon while browsing through an old family cookbook, filled with faded photographs and handwritten notes from generations past. My grandmother's perfectly preserved peaches, her spicy pickled onions—they whispered stories of patience and dedication. Inspired by this legacy, I embarked on my own preserving adventure. This recipe is my modern interpretation, a fusion of old-world techniques and contemporary flavors. The result? Jars of glistening, ruby-red cherries, infused with the subtle warmth of vanilla and a delightful kick of vodka. These aren't just cherries; they're little pockets of sunshine, ready to brighten any occasion.

The process itself is a meditative one. The gentle simmering of the sugar syrup, the careful filling of the jars, the satisfying hiss as the lids seal—each step is a small act of creation. It’s a perfect antidote to the fast-paced world we live in, a chance to connect with something real and tangible. And the best part? Sharing these homemade treasures with friends and family. The smiles and expressions of delight are more than enough reward for the time and effort invested.

Beyond the sensory experience, making these Vanilla Vodka Cherries has become a form of self-care. It’s a way to unwind, to de-stress, and to reconnect with my inner peace. The rhythmic movements, the satisfying smells, the anticipation of the final product—it’s a mini-retreat that I can indulge in whenever life gets overwhelming. And the end result? Not just delicious cherries, but a sense of accomplishment and calm that lingers long after the last jar is sealed.

These cherries aren't just a dessert; they're a versatile ingredient that can elevate a simple cocktail or grace a decadent cheesecake. Imagine them nestled in a bowl of creamy vanilla ice cream, their sweet and tart flavors dancing on your tongue. Or consider the sophisticated elegance they bring to a martini. They offer an unparalleled culinary experience that goes beyond simple sweetness.

More than just a recipe, this is an experience. A journey of flavors and aromas, of patience and precision. It's about connecting with the roots of culinary tradition, while adding your own personal touch and flair. It's a recipe for deliciousness, yes, but also a recipe for self-discovery and connection with the simple pleasures of life. So go ahead, give it a try. You might just discover a new way to escape the everyday and find joy in the process of creation.

The beauty of this recipe lies in its adaptability. Feel free to experiment with different types of cherries, perhaps adding a touch of lemon zest or a sprig of rosemary to the jars for a unique twist. The possibilities are endless, limited only by your imagination and the bounty of the season. Don't be afraid to get creative; your own unique variation might become a cherished family tradition for generations to come. And remember, the most important ingredient is love, poured into each step of the process.

So gather your ingredients, clear your schedule, and prepare for a delightful culinary adventure. The journey of creating these Vanilla Vodka Cherries is as rewarding as the delicious result. It's a recipe for relaxation, for creativity, and for the simple joy of making something truly special, something you can share and savor, something to be cherished and remembered. Enjoy the process, enjoy the taste, and enjoy the memories you'll create.

Step-by-step

    • Bring a water bath in your stock pot to a boil.
    • Prep your jars, rings and lids and keep warm.
    • Meanwhile bring the 2 cups water and sugar to a boil in a small saucepan, whisking to dissolve the sugar.
    • Remove from heat and set your simple syrup aside.
    • Remove the canning jars from the water bath and fill with the cherries and two halves of vanilla bean in each jar, filling the jars about 3/4 full and pressing down a bit to compress the contents.
    • Divide the simple syrup between the jars, filling each about 1/3 of the way full, then fill to the top with vodka, leaving 1/4" headroom in each jar.
    • Place a lid and ring on each jar and finger tighten.
    • Then place in the boiling water bath on a rack (make sure the jars are covered by at least an inch of water) and process for 9 minutes.
    • Once the nine minutes are over, turn off the heat and let the jars sit in the water for five more minutes.
    • Remove the jars from the water bath, set them on a dish towel to cool on the counter to room temperature.
    • After they are cooled check to see that the lids are sealed.
    • Dry the rings and screw them back on.
    • Label the jars and store in a cool dark place for up to a year.
