Brian's Burritos

Brian's Burritos
Brian's Burritos
From Brian Carli: This is something I used to make with my Dad all the time. I'm not sure if it is the food or the memories I like more, but they are super tasty. Don't eat them while wearing a nice shirt; they can be very messy sometimes. Just take the recipe as a starting place. I add different chilies or use different red meat and make it as a double or triple batch so there are leftovers. They taste even better the next day!

Brian's Burritos: A Taste of Home and Happy Memories

The aroma of sizzling beef and warm tortillas always takes me back to my childhood. These aren't just burritos; they're a culinary time machine, transporting me to the kitchen where my dad and I spent countless hours creating these messy masterpieces. It's a tradition that holds a special place in my heart, and it's a tradition I'm happy to share with you. The recipe itself is simple, straightforward, and incredibly flexible. It’s more of a guideline than a strict set of instructions – a framework upon which you can build your own culinary adventures. My dad always encouraged experimentation, adding different chilies, using various cuts of red meat, and even doubling or tripling the recipe to ensure we had enough leftovers for the next day. And let me tell you, these burritos are even better the day after!

The secret, I think, lies in the slow cooking process. The meat simmers gently in a rich, flavorful sauce, allowing the flavors to meld and deepen. The result is incredibly tender beef that practically melts in your mouth. Each bite is a symphony of textures and tastes, the soft tortillas complementing the succulent meat and vibrant sauce. I always suggest using good quality tortillas; the quality of your tortilla significantly impacts the overall taste. And don't be afraid to get creative with the toppings! While cheese, salsa, and sour cream are classic choices, the possibilities are endless. Experiment with different salsas, add a dollop of guacamole, or drizzle some spicy mole sauce for an extra kick. It's all about personal preference and the joy of creating something delicious and unique.

Beyond the deliciousness, these burritos are more than just a meal; they're a connection to the past, a tangible link to cherished memories. The messy, flavorful experience of devouring a homemade burrito reminds me of countless afternoons spent with my father, creating memories that are as heartwarming as the food itself. This recipe is more than just a list of ingredients; it’s an invitation to create your own heartwarming traditions, to share the joy of cooking with loved ones, and to savor the simple pleasures of a delicious, homemade meal. So, gather your ingredients, put on some music, and prepare to embark on a culinary journey filled with flavor and fond memories. Remember, the best part of this recipe is the freedom to adapt it to your tastes, to make it your own. And who knows? You might just create a new family favorite in the process.

Tips and variations:

  • Meat Alternatives: While beef is traditional, you can easily substitute with other meats like pork, chicken, or even vegetarian options like lentils or jackfruit.
  • Spice Level: Adjust the amount of chili to your preferred spice level. Start with less and add more as needed.
  • Tortillas: Experiment with different types of tortillas, such as corn tortillas for a slightly different taste and texture.
  • Toppings: Get creative with your toppings! Try adding different cheeses, vegetables, or even a fried egg for an extra protein boost.
  • Make it Ahead: These burritos can be made ahead of time and reheated, making them perfect for meal prepping.
  • Leftovers: The flavors deepen overnight, so don't be afraid to make a double batch and enjoy the leftovers the next day!

These Brian's Burritos are not just a recipe; they're a story, a tradition, and a delightful culinary experience that you can share with your family and friends. Enjoy!

Step-by-step

    • Heat the fat/oil in roaster.
    • Add meat and brown well over medium heat.
    • Stir/dissolve beef cubes in hot water and pour over meat.
    • Put next six ingredients in the blender, blend together.
    • Pour mixture over the meat and stir.
    • Cover and bake at 300 degrees F for about 2 hours - until the meat is tender.
    • When you take the meat out of the oven, if you have larger pieces - shred them with a fork.
    • If you have a lot of sauce left in the pan then boil uncovered to thicken it up.
    • Spoon the meat mixture into tortillas, tuck in edges and roll them up.
    • Put them seam side down in a baking pan and bake at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes.
    • If you are feeling really adventurous you can deep fry them too, but then they magically become chimichangas!
    • Top with cheese, salsa, mole sauce, sour cream or anything else you are in the mood to eat.
    • Goes great with black beans and rice.
