Country Fair Honey Wheat Dinner Rolls: A Family Recipe

My Grandmother's Secret: Country Fair Honey Wheat Dinner Rolls

The aroma of freshly baked bread is one of the most comforting things in the world. For me, that scent is inextricably linked to my grandmother's kitchen. Her Country Fair Honey Wheat Dinner Rolls weren't just rolls; they were little pockets of sunshine, each bite a burst of warmth and sweetness. I remember helping her in the kitchen as a child, mesmerized by the way the dough rose and transformed, the gentle kneading, the anticipation of the golden-brown crust emerging from the oven. Those rolls were the heart of countless family gatherings, holidays, and Sunday dinners. They weren't just food; they were memories.

Years have passed since Grandma's hands worked that dough, but the recipe lives on, passed down and cherished. It's a recipe I've tweaked and perfected over time, a testament to the joy of culinary experimentation. I've entered these rolls in countless baking competitions, often winning or placing close to the top. Their popularity is no surprise – they are undeniably light, bursting with flavor, and wonderfully buttery. They're the kind of rolls that disappear quickly, leaving only happy sighs and requests for seconds. The secret, I think, lies in the balance of the honey's sweetness, the subtle earthiness of whole wheat flour, and the richness of the butter. It's a harmony that sings on the palate.

This recipe isn't just about following instructions; it's about creating something special, something that connects you to your family history and to the simple pleasures of baking. It’s about the warmth of a kitchen filled with the intoxicating smell of rising dough, the satisfaction of creating something delicious from scratch, and the joy of sharing that creation with those you love. It's about more than just rolls; it's about love, family, and the enduring power of a well-loved recipe. So, gather your ingredients, preheat your oven, and let the magic begin. Because even if you're not a seasoned baker, with this recipe, success is almost guaranteed. And the best part? The taste of these rolls will transport you right back to those warm, comforting moments in Grandma's kitchen.

Beyond the Recipe: While this recipe is relatively straightforward, there are a few key points to consider for optimal results. The quality of your ingredients matters; use good quality butter, honey, and flour for the best flavor. Don't rush the rising process – giving the dough ample time to rise is crucial for a light and airy texture. And finally, don't be afraid to experiment. Once you master the basic recipe, you can add your own personal touches – perhaps a sprinkle of cinnamon or a drizzle of glaze. The possibilities are endless!

Baking these rolls is more than just a task; it’s an experience. It's about connecting with the past, creating memories, and sharing the simple joy of delicious homemade bread. So put on your apron, gather your ingredients, and let the baking begin. You won’t be disappointed. Trust me. These rolls are something truly special.

Step-by-step

    • In a large bowl, combine sugar, water, yeast, let sit for about 5-10 minutes, set aside till begins to foam.
    • Melt butter, add egg and honey, mix well with wire whip and set aside.
    • Place flour, salt in a large mixer bowl, turn on and let dough hook make a small well in center.
    • Dump liquid egg, honey, butter in center along with the yeast, water, and sugar mix...all in the center of the flour well. Turn on mixer slowly with dough hook going and let it do its job until dough just slightly comes away from edges; it may still slightly stick on the bottom of the bowl and that's perfect. Remove dough, place in a greased bowl, cover with saran wrap and let rise. Approx 45 min (double in size).
    • Grease a 13x9 baking pan (or more since this is 5 dozen...LOL).
    • Turn dough out onto a VERY LIGHTLY floured surface. (Too much flour or messing with the product at this point will hinder final product quality.)
    • Divide into equal pieces. Approx 2 1/2 oz.
    • Roll each piece into a smooth round ball. There is a method for this and it gets easier and easier the more you do it. HONESTLY!!!
    • Place in rows in prepared pan.
    • Cover carefully with saran wrap or a dry, clean kitchen towel and let rise for 45 min; until doubled.
    • Heat oven to 350*.
    • Bake until golden brown, about 17 minutes, internal temp is 195 degrees.
