This is an old Amish recipe that my mother used to make. I kinda of think of it as an American style lasagna. This is very good with a salad and fresh bread.

Amish Style Yumasetta: A Comfort Food Classic

Amish Style Yumasetta: A Taste of Home

This recipe isn't just a dish; it's a story. It's a story passed down through generations, a testament to the simple joys of family meals and the comforting warmth of a home-cooked supper. My mother, bless her heart, always had a way of making even the most mundane weeknight dinner feel special, and this Amish-style Yumasetta was one of her specialties. I remember the aroma filling our kitchen—a rich blend of savory beef, sweet tomato, and creamy mushrooms—and the anticipation building as the golden-brown casserole emerged from the oven, bubbling with cheesy goodness. It's a dish that instantly transports me back to those cherished moments, to a time when family gathered around the table, sharing stories and laughter, and the simplest of meals felt like a celebration.

What is Yumasetta, you ask? Well, it's a delightful hybrid, a culinary fusion if you will. Imagine a lasagna, but with a distinctly American twist. Forget the intricate layers of pasta and delicate sauces; this is hearty, wholesome comfort food. It's a warm embrace on a chilly evening, a perfect antidote to a long day, and a crowd-pleaser that’s sure to satisfy even the most discerning palates. The base is a flavorful ground beef mixture, seasoned simply but perfectly, enriched by the sweetness of brown sugar and the tang of tomato soup. Then come layers of tender egg noodles, bathed in a creamy mushroom or chicken soup, which adds an element of unexpected richness. And finally, the crowning glory: a generous layer of melted American cheese, bringing it all together in a symphony of textures and tastes.

The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity. There are no fancy ingredients, no obscure techniques—just good, honest cooking. The result? A dish that is both satisfying and surprisingly elegant. It’s a testament to the fact that extraordinary meals don’t always require complex preparations. Sometimes, the most memorable dishes are the ones that taste of home, of love, of family traditions passed down through generations. This is more than just a recipe; it's a legacy.

Serving Suggestions: This dish is perfect on its own, but it pairs beautifully with a crisp green salad and a loaf of crusty bread. A simple side salad with a light vinaigrette provides a refreshing counterpoint to the richness of the Yumasetta. The crusty bread, toasted and lightly buttered, is ideal for soaking up the delicious sauce. Enjoy!

Step-by-step

    • Preheat oven to 350
    • Brown Ground beef with onions, and green peppers and drain grease.
    • Add in two cans of Tomato soup and brown sugar. Mix well.
    • Meanwhile boil noodles per directions to al dente. Do not over cook.
    • Drain noodles and add 2 cans of either cream of mushroom or cream of chicken soup and mix well.
    • Now the lasagna part begins....
    • Layer half of the hamburger mixture into the bottom of a 9 x 13 baking dish.
    • Then layer half of the noodle mixture on top of the hamburger.
    • Now layer 8 slices of cheese on top of that.
    • Repeat with remaining hamburger and noodles and top with remaining slices of cheese and bake in oven for 45 min. I recommend covering with aluminum foil.
    • Enjoy!
