Mom's Sourdough Bread: A Slice of Home

The aroma of freshly baked bread – that's what I associate most with my childhood home. My mom's sourdough bread wasn't just bread; it was a warm hug, a comforting presence on the kitchen counter, and the centerpiece of countless family meals. The kitchen, with its flour-dusted surfaces and the rhythmic kneading of dough, was always bustling with activity, a place where memories were baked right into every crusty loaf. This recipe isn't just a collection of ingredients; it's a portal back to those simpler times, a testament to the love and patience poured into each loaf.

The recipe itself is deceptively simple, but the magic lies in the sourdough starter. It's a living thing, a testament to the slow, patient process that yields such incredible flavour. Each batch is unique, reflecting the nuances of the environment, the subtle shifts in temperature, and perhaps even a little bit of my mom's magic. I remember watching her tending to the starter, a careful dance between flour and water, a process that felt almost sacred. The starter, she’d say, was the heart of the bread, its beating soul, and I believe her. It gave the bread its unique tang, its depth of flavour, a complex symphony of tastes that are impossible to replicate with commercial yeast.

Beyond the technical aspects, this bread is about more than just sustenance; it's about connection. It's the bread that fueled our family gatherings, the bread that accompanied countless conversations, laughter, and shared stories. It’s the bread that symbolized warmth, family, and the simple comforts of home. The act of baking itself became a family affair; I'd help her measure the ingredients, watch her knead the dough, and eventually, I learned to bake my own loaves, carrying on the tradition. Every time I bake this bread, I feel a profound sense of nostalgia, a connection to my past, and a renewed appreciation for the simple pleasures in life.

More than just a recipe, this sourdough bread is a legacy, a piece of family history carried forward, one loaf at a time. It’s the comforting embrace of a familiar taste, a tangible link to the past, a timeless tradition that continues to bring joy and nourishment to my family and friends. The simple act of sharing a slice of this bread is an invitation to share memories, to connect with loved ones, and to savor the enduring power of simple, wholesome food.

The satisfying crunch of the crust, the airy softness of the crumb, the subtle tang of the sourdough – these are not merely sensory experiences, but echoes of a childhood filled with warmth, laughter, and the comforting smell of freshly baked bread. This recipe is more than just a set of instructions; it's a doorway back to simpler times, a reminder of the love and care that can be baked into every loaf.

So, gather your ingredients, take a deep breath, and let the magic of sourdough transform your kitchen into a haven of warmth and delicious aromas. Let the rhythmic kneading of the dough be a meditative exercise, a moment to connect with the process and the generations that came before. And finally, savor the taste of home – a taste that goes far beyond the ingredients themselves.

Ingredients:

  • 2 eggs
  • 3 teaspoons salt
  • 6 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup flaxseed
  • 3 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 cups cracked wheat flour
  • 2 cups dark rye flour
  • 3 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup sourdough starter

Step-by-step

    • Take sourdough starter out of the fridge and put in a large bowl with two cups of white flour and mix it up with enough water to make it fluid. Let sit overnight.
    • Put 3 teaspoons of sugar in warm water in a small dish with 3 teaspoons of yeast and let it foam up (about 20 minutes).
    • Put all the ingredients in a large bowl and mix thoroughly. Add water until dough is quite wet. Let rise for about one hour. Take three bread pans and grease up with butter (margarine). Dust the pans with flour.
    • Fill the bread pans with the dough split evenly (about half full) and let rise for another hour.
    • Turn oven on to 375 degrees F and put the bread in and bake for one hour.
