My Unexpected Baking Adventure: Cheese and Bacon Rolls

As a busy working mom, finding time for anything beyond the daily grind feels like a luxury. My days are a whirlwind of meetings, school runs, and grocery shopping, leaving little room for elaborate culinary creations. So, when I stumbled upon this recipe for cheese and bacon rolls, I was initially hesitant. Baking, in my mind, was synonymous with time-consuming projects, requiring meticulous attention and a level of patience I rarely possess. However, the simplicity of the ingredients and the promise of a delicious treat eventually won me over.

The recipe itself was surprisingly straightforward, even for someone with my limited baking experience. The instructions were clear and easy to follow, making the entire process surprisingly stress-free. I especially appreciated the flexibility; the recipe didn't demand the use of specialized equipment, making it adaptable to any kitchen. I didn't have a Thermomix, as specified in the recipe, but I managed perfectly well with my regular stand mixer. This adaptability is a significant plus, especially for those of us who don't have a fully-stocked professional kitchen at our disposal.

The aroma that filled my kitchen during baking was truly enchanting. The combination of savory bacon and rich cheese was intoxicating, and I found myself eagerly anticipating the final product. The golden-brown rolls, once out of the oven, were a testament to the recipe's simplicity and effectiveness. The texture was delightful; soft and fluffy on the inside, with a satisfyingly crisp exterior. The salty bacon and the sharp cheese provided the perfect counterpoint to the soft dough, creating a harmonious blend of flavors.

These rolls weren't just delicious; they were also incredibly versatile. I enjoyed them for breakfast, alongside a simple cup of coffee, for a quick and satisfying start to the day. They also made a fantastic accompaniment to a light lunch, and even served as a delightful appetizer at a casual dinner party. Their ease of preparation and portability made them perfect for packing in school lunches as well. The leftovers were equally delightful; a quick toast in the oven revived them to near-fresh perfection.

The entire experience was far more enjoyable than I initially anticipated. It was a relaxing break from my routine, a small act of self-care hidden within the seemingly mundane tasks of everyday life. The sense of accomplishment in creating something delicious from scratch was unexpectedly rewarding. This wasn't just about making a meal; it was about reclaiming a bit of time for myself, about nurturing my creativity, and about creating a moment of joy amidst the chaos. I highly recommend this recipe to anyone, regardless of their baking experience. It's a testament to the fact that delicious and rewarding experiences don’t always have to be complicated.

It’s more than just a recipe; it's a reminder that even amidst the whirlwind of daily life, there's always room for a little bit of culinary magic. The ease of the recipe made it accessible, the deliciousness made it memorable, and the simple act of baking brought a sense of peace and accomplishment that I wasn't expecting. It's a recipe I will definitely be revisiting again and again.

Ingredients I used: (Note: I substituted readily available ingredients as needed. Feel free to do the same!)

  • 1 lightly beaten egg
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 2 tsp caster sugar
  • 7g sachet dry yeast
  • 280g warm water
  • 480g bread flour
  • 1 tbsp good olive oil
  • 200g rindless bacon, finely chopped
  • 1 1/3 cups grated tasty cheese

Tips and Variations:

  • Experiment with different types of cheese. Cheddar, mozzarella, or even a blend would be delicious.
  • Add herbs and spices to the dough for extra flavor. Rosemary, thyme, or oregano would work well.
  • If you don't have a bread maker or Thermomix, you can easily make the dough by hand. Just be sure to knead it well.
  • These rolls freeze well. Simply wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and store them in a freezer bag.

Baking is a journey of discovery, a testament to the power of simple ingredients transformed into something truly special. This recipe is a perfect example of that magic. Give it a try, and savor the delicious results!

Step-by-step

    • Place yeast, sugar and warm water into TM jug, mix 20 secs - speed 4. Stand in a warm place for 10 mins, or until frothy.
    • Place jug back in TM, then add salt, flour and oil, and mix 5 secs - speed 7 to combine.
    • Set dial to closed lid position, and set for 1 minute 30 secs on interval speed.
    • Wrap in TM bread mat, or place in a large, lightly greased bowl. Cover and set aside in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size. (I placed it in my warm car, and it was ready in 30 minutes).
    • Using your fist, punch dough down. Knead until smooth.
    • Grease two large baking trays (I used olive oil spray - made the bases nice and crunchy). Divide dough into 8 even portions. Roll each portion into a 10cm x 12cm oval shape. Place ovals, 5cm apart on a prepared trays.
    • Cover with lightly greased cling wrap (used olive spray again). Set aside in a warm place for 30-40 minutes or until dough has almost doubled in size.
    • Pre-heat oven 200c normal, or 180c fan force (preferred). Once ovals have risen, brush with whisked egg, and sprinkle with the cheese then bacon pieces.
    • Bake for 20 minutes.
