This recipe was handed down to my sister by her mother-in-law and then to me. I make this all the time and since it has to simmer for up to 4 hours, I make plenty and freeze it.

Grandma's Secret Spaghetti Sauce with Pork Chops and Green Peppers

Grandma's Secret Spaghetti Sauce: A Family Recipe Passed Down Through Generations

This isn't just a recipe; it's a story. A story of family, tradition, and a whole lot of deliciousness. This spaghetti sauce with pork chops and green peppers recipe has been a staple in my family for as long as I can remember. It started with my sister's mother-in-law, then passed down to my sister, and finally landed in my kitchen where it's become a weekly (sometimes twice-weekly!) event. The beauty of this recipe lies not just in its incredible flavor but also in its versatility and forgiving nature. You can adapt it to your taste, your schedule, and even your preferred cooking method – stovetop or slow cooker, both work beautifully.

The aroma that wafts from the kitchen as this sauce simmers is intoxicating. A rich blend of savory pork, sweet peppers, and tangy tomatoes creates a symphony of scents that will make your mouth water. The long simmering time is key; it allows the flavors to meld and deepen, creating a sauce that's far greater than the sum of its parts. And the best part? This recipe makes enough to enjoy now, and to freeze for later. It's a true lifesaver on busy weeknights, offering a comforting and delicious meal without the stress of extensive prep time. I often make a double batch, ensuring we always have some tucked away in the freezer, ready to be thawed and served. Imagine a cozy evening, maybe a little snow falling outside, and a warm bowl of this hearty spaghetti filling your belly - pure comfort food perfection.

Why this recipe is a keeper: Beyond its deliciousness, this recipe is wonderfully adaptable. Feel free to experiment with different types of peppers – bell peppers in various colours, poblanos, or even some spicy jalapeños for a kick. You could also swap out the pork chops for Italian sausage, ground beef, or even chicken. The fundamental principle remains the same: a slow-cooked tomato-based sauce with tender meat and flavorful vegetables. The key to success lies in the long simmering process, allowing the flavors to fully develop and creating a depth of taste you simply won't find in quicker recipes. This recipe is a testament to the power of simplicity and the enduring magic of recipes passed down through the generations – a true culinary legacy in a pot.

Beyond the taste, this recipe embodies the warmth and love that I associate with family gatherings. The act of making it, the hours spent simmering and stirring, are as important as the final product itself. It's a chance to disconnect from the demands of daily life and reconnect with a family tradition that brings so much joy. The scent of the sauce fills the house, beckoning everyone to the table, creating memories that will be cherished for years to come. This isn’t just a meal; it’s an experience. A comforting, warming, and above all, delicious experience that brings family and friends together.

Tips and tricks: For an even richer flavor, consider using good quality olive oil and crushed San Marzano tomatoes. Don't be afraid to adjust the seasoning to your liking; a pinch of sugar can help balance the acidity of the tomatoes, while a dash of red pepper flakes can add a little heat. If you're short on time, you can certainly reduce the simmering time, but you'll sacrifice some of the depth of flavor that long, slow cooking provides. However, even with a reduced simmering time, you'll still get a delicious result.

So, I encourage you to give this recipe a try. It's not just a meal; it’s a journey, a culinary adventure that begins in your kitchen and ends with a warm, happy family gathering around a table piled high with delicious, homemade spaghetti.

Step-by-step

    • Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, water and wine into a large saucepan and simmer on low heat, covered.
    • In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil and add pork chops (seasoned with salt & pepper to taste) until slightly browned and add to the sauce and continue to simmer for 3 hours, checking and stirring periodically so it doesn't stick.
    • I've also prepared this sauce in the crock pot and have let it simmer for about 6 hours on low heat.
    • Slice the green peppers into strips (season to taste with salt and pepper) and add to the hot skillet with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and brown. Set aside. Do the same with the onions.
    • Once the sauce is done simmering for 3 hours on the stove, or 6 in the crockpot, add your peppers and onions and simmer for another hour. If using the crock pot, double the time.
