My Unexpected Culinary Adventure: Superfood Hot Chocolate and Caramelized Brioche

As a busy businesswoman, juggling meetings, deadlines, and client calls, finding time for anything beyond grabbing a quick coffee is a challenge. However, I recently discovered a new ritual that’s not only delicious but also surprisingly relaxing – a steaming mug of superfood hot chocolate paired with perfectly caramelized brioche. This isn't your average hot chocolate; it’s a decadent, sophisticated treat that nourishes both body and soul. The secret? A vibrant beet puree that adds a subtle earthy sweetness and a gorgeous deep color, along with a blend of cacao, spices, and chia seeds for a boost of antioxidants and fiber.

My initial reaction to adding beets to hot chocolate was skepticism. Beets? Really? But I’m always up for an experiment in the kitchen, especially when it means something potentially healthier and more flavorful than my usual afternoon caffeine fix. The surprising thing is that the beet puree is completely undetectable in the finished drink, adding a beautiful rich color and a subtle sweetness that complements the cacao perfectly. The spices—cinnamon, ginger, and a hint of cayenne—add warmth and depth, creating a complex flavor profile that keeps me coming back for more.

The caramelized brioche is the perfect counterpoint to the rich, warming hot chocolate. The slightly crisp exterior and soft, buttery interior provide a delightful textural contrast. The honey adds a touch of sweetness that balances the slight bitterness of the cacao, creating a harmonious symphony of flavors in every bite. I found that using high-quality brioche makes all the difference – the richness of the bread truly elevates the experience. Making it heart-shaped adds a little extra fun and visual appeal!

This recipe has become my go-to indulgence. It's a luxurious treat that takes just a few minutes to prepare, perfect for a quiet evening at home or a special occasion. I can feel the stress melting away with each sip of this warm, comforting drink. The combination of sweet and earthy notes, the creamy texture, and the satisfying crunch of the caramelized brioche—it's the perfect ending to a long day, or a delightful start to a weekend morning. It has become a small moment of self-care, a reminder to slow down and savor the simple pleasures of life. The antioxidants from the cacao and the added nutritional benefits from the beets only make it that much better. It’s a small rebellion against the usual fast-paced life, a testament to the fact that even a busy professional can find time for a little indulgence and self-care, one delicious cup at a time.

I’ve already shared this recipe with friends and colleagues, and everyone is hooked. It's the kind of treat that makes people happy and sparks conversation. It’s more than just a recipe; it’s an experience, a small act of self-care that transforms an ordinary moment into something extraordinary. The unexpected combination of ingredients and the unique taste makes it stand out from other hot chocolate recipes, turning what could be an ordinary drink into a special moment of self-indulgence.

Give this recipe a try. I guarantee it will become your new favorite way to unwind and treat yourself. And who knows, maybe you'll even discover a new love for beets in the process! The process of making the hot chocolate is simple, the outcome is delicious, and the sense of satisfaction is immeasurable. It's a perfect blend of comfort and sophistication, a treat you can feel good about enjoying.

Step-by-step

    • Add the beet to a blender with 1/3 cup water and puree until completely smooth. If needed, add more water to help puree the beet. It's OK if the beet puree is thin. You need between 1/4 and 1/2 cup of beet puree for the hot chocolate.
    • In a bowl, combine the cacao powder, coconut sugar, chia seeds, instant coffee, pinch of salt, pinch of cinnamon, pinch of ginger and a pinch of cayenne. If you do not like a spiced hot chocolate, omit the ginger and cayenne.
    • Add the milk to a heavy bottom pot and warm over medium low heat until steaming. Whisk in the dry powder mixture until combined. Add anywhere between 1/4 cup and 1/2 cup of the beet puree. I used 1/2 cup, but taste the hot chocolate once you've added 1/4 cup of the beets, then add more to your liking. Stir in the vanilla. If desired, you can now carefully transfer the hot chocolate to a blender and blend until smooth. This helps break the chia seeds up. Return the hot chocolate to the pot and keep over low heat.
    • Meanwhile, heat a skillet over medium heat and add the coconut oil. If desired, cut your brioche into heart shapes. Add the brioche to the skillet and cook until toasted, about 2 minutes per side. Once the bread is toasted, drizzle each piece with a little honey. Cook until the brioche is golden and caramelized. WATCH closely, you can quickly over caramelize the honey! Remove from the skillet and sprinkle with salt if desired.
    • Pour the hot chocolate between two mugs and serve immediately with the warm caramelized brioche.
