My Cherry Cherry Boom Boom Baking Adventure: A Lady Gaga-Inspired Cake

As a busy working mom, finding time for hobbies is a challenge. But baking, for me, isn't just a hobby; it's a form of self-care, a way to disconnect from the demands of daily life and reconnect with my creativity. This weekend, I decided to tackle a particularly ambitious project: a stunning red velvet cake inspired by Lady Gaga's iconic "Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say)." The song itself is a vibrant burst of energy, and I wanted the cake to reflect that same exuberance. The recipe promised a gorgeous, deep red hue, packed with the rich, sweet flavor of cherries, and I knew it would be the perfect centerpiece for a small gathering with friends.

The process was, as many baking projects are, a blend of meticulous precision and happy accidents. Following the instructions, I meticulously measured out each ingredient—the flour, the sugar, the precisely-chopped glace cherries—each step a tiny victory in the face of the week's hectic schedule. The aroma of baking cake filled my kitchen, a comforting scent that promised a sweet reward for my efforts. The most challenging part, I have to admit, was getting the layers perfectly even. I spent a good amount of time carefully trimming each layer to ensure that they were all the same height—a detail, I'll admit, that adds a professional touch to the final product.

But the real magic happened when I started frosting the cake. The vibrant red frosting, a masterpiece in itself, transformed the simple cake layers into something truly spectacular. I loved creating the ombre effect with the sprinkles – it added a playful touch that perfectly complemented the sophisticated elegance of the cake. The final addition of the maraschino cherries, perfectly nestled atop the red swirls, was the perfect finishing touch. The result was a cake that was as visually stunning as it was delicious. It was more than just a cake; it was a testament to the power of creativity and the joy that can be found in simple things—especially when those simple things are delicious, cherry-flavored works of art.

This cake wasn't just a culinary triumph; it was a reminder that even amidst the chaos of everyday life, there's always time to indulge in a little bit of sweetness, a little bit of creativity, and a whole lot of Lady Gaga-inspired baking fun. It was the perfect end to a long week, a celebration of accomplishment, and a delicious reminder that sometimes, the sweetest victories are the ones we bake ourselves.

The next time you feel overwhelmed by the demands of your day, remember this: a little bit of flour, sugar, and cherry brandy can go a long way in restoring your sense of calm and joy. So, grab your apron, put on some music, and let the baking begin. You might just surprise yourself with what you create. And who knows, maybe you’ll even inspire your own unique baking adventure!

Step-by-step

    • Frosting: To prepare white frosting, add cherry brandy and mix until well combined. To prepare the red frosting, add cherry brandy and food gels and mix until well combined. Note: You’ll need to crumb coat the cake before you color the red frosting.
    • Cake: Preheat a fan-forced oven to 160C (320F) or 180C (356F) for a conventional oven. Spray an 8” cake tin with oil spray and line the bottom with baking paper.
    • In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, add flour, baking powder, caster sugar, and salt. Mix on low speed for a couple of minutes.
    • Add softened butter and mix until it resembles a fine sand-like texture.
    • Add milk, oil, Greek yogurt, eggs, brandy, chopped glace cherries, red food gel, pink food gel, and vanilla extract. Mix on medium speed until no dry ingredients are visible. Scrape down the bowl and mix for another 20 seconds.
    • Fill three 8” cake tins with batter. Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
    • Allow tins to cool for 2 minutes, then flip onto a cooling rack to cool completely.
    • Trim the top off each cake layer to make even and flat layers.
    • Crumb coat the cake using the white frosting.
    • Add a layer of red frosting and smooth it out using a cake scraper.
    • Chill the cake.
    • Add sprinkles to the side of the cake, creating an ombre effect.
    • Frost red swirls on top and add maraschino cherries.
