Simple Broiled Asparagus: A Weeknight Winner

My Simple, Yet Delicious Broiled Asparagus Recipe

As a busy working mom, I’m always on the lookout for quick, healthy, and delicious meals that the whole family will enjoy. Weeknights are a whirlwind of activity – school pick-ups, homework battles, and the ever-present need to get dinner on the table before everyone melts down. This simple broiled asparagus recipe has become a lifesaver. It’s so easy to make, requiring minimal prep time and only a handful of ingredients. Plus, it’s packed with flavor and nutrients, making it a guilt-free indulgence.

Initially, I was skeptical. Asparagus? I always thought it was a fussy vegetable, something you’d only find at fancy restaurants. But I was pleasantly surprised. This recipe is so straightforward, even my kids (who usually turn their noses up at vegetables) happily devoured it. The secret? It’s all about the simple yet perfect balance of flavors. The slight char from broiling gives the asparagus a wonderful smoky taste, the lemon juice adds a touch of brightness and acidity, and the olive oil provides a healthy richness. And of course, a generous sprinkle of sea salt enhances all the natural flavors.

This isn’t just a weeknight solution; it’s equally perfect for a simple side dish at a weekend brunch or barbecue. It adds a touch of elegance without demanding hours in the kitchen. The best part is that you can adjust the cooking time to your preference, achieving the perfect level of tenderness – not too mushy, not too crunchy. It's a versatile side that complements a variety of main courses, from grilled chicken and fish to steak and vegetarian options. Seriously, give this recipe a try; I'm certain it will quickly become a staple in your meal rotation.

Beyond the recipe: I often find myself adapting this recipe based on what’s in my pantry or what my family's cravings dictate. Sometimes I'll add a sprinkle of red pepper flakes for a touch of heat, or perhaps some freshly chopped garlic for an extra layer of flavor. The possibilities are endless! You can experiment with different herbs and spices to create your own unique variation. The important thing is to keep it simple and let the natural flavor of the asparagus shine through.

I hope you enjoy this simple yet delicious recipe as much as my family does. Let me know in the comments if you decide to try it out, and if you come up with any creative variations of your own.

Tips for success:

  • Use fresh, high-quality asparagus for the best flavor and texture.
  • Don't overcrowd the baking sheet. Give the asparagus enough space to cook evenly.
  • Adjust the cooking time depending on the thickness of your asparagus. Thicker spears may require a few extra minutes.
  • Feel free to experiment with different herbs and spices to customize the flavor profile to your liking.
  • Serve immediately for the best taste and texture.

Variations to Try:

  • Garlic Parmesan Asparagus: Add minced garlic and grated Parmesan cheese to the asparagus before broiling.
  • Spicy Asparagus: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of your favorite hot sauce for a spicy kick.
  • Lemon Herb Asparagus: Add fresh herbs like rosemary, thyme, or oregano to the asparagus along with the lemon juice.
  • Balsamic Glaze Asparagus: Drizzle a balsamic glaze over the cooked asparagus for a sweet and tangy finish.

Step-by-step

    • Set oven to broil - on high
    • Rinse the asparagus and dry them with a paper towel
    • Put foil down on a cookie sheet (baking dish) and place all of the asparagus on the foil. Drizzle on the olive oil and sprinkle some sea salt all over the asparagus.
    • Cut the lemon into fourths and squeeze three of them all over the asparagus. Rub them down good with the 3 ingredient mixture.
    • Put them in the oven and after 4 minutes - shake the sheet or remove it and turn them over
    • Cook for another 4 - 6 minutes and they should be perfectly tender. Not yucky soft and not raw-hard.
