My Secret Weapon for Effortless Weeknight Meals: Homemade Pizza Sauce

As a busy working mom, time is my most precious commodity. Juggling work deadlines, school pick-ups, and keeping a somewhat clean house leaves little room for elaborate cooking projects. That’s why I've become a huge advocate for simple, delicious recipes that don’t sacrifice flavor for convenience. And my secret weapon in the battle against weeknight mealtime stress? Homemade pizza sauce.

I know what you're thinking: "Homemade pizza sauce? Isn't that time-consuming?" The beauty of this recipe is its simplicity. It comes together in minutes, and the payoff is immense. Forget those bland, jarred sauces that taste like something questionable is hiding in the back of the pantry! My homemade version boasts a vibrant, fresh flavor that elevates even the simplest of pizzas. It's bursting with the aromatic essence of basil, oregano, and a hint of garlic and onion – a symphony of Italian flavors that make every bite a little slice of heaven.

The best part? This isn't just for pizzas. Oh no, my friends, its uses are far more extensive than that. I’ve used it to jazz up pasta nights, creating a quick and easy pasta sauce that rivals anything from a fancy Italian restaurant. A dollop on toasted bread, maybe with a little avocado and some smoky paprika adds an amazing flavour punch and turns a simple snack into a sophisticated appetizer. The possibilities are truly endless.

One of my favorite ways to utilize this versatile sauce is in my super quick "pizza toast." Picture this: perfectly toasted artisan bread, topped with creamy avocado, a sprinkle of smoked paprika for a delightful smokiness, and a generous layer of my homemade pizza sauce. It's a game-changer for a quick lunch, a satisfying snack, or even a fun appetizer for a get-together. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you.

Beyond the convenience, the biggest win for this recipe is the control over ingredients. I'm meticulous about what goes into my family's food, so I love the ability to tailor the sauce to our preferences. Want less spice? Easy, just reduce the red pepper flakes. Looking for a sweeter sauce? A touch more maple syrup will do the trick. This recipe is a blank canvas, and you can easily customize it to your liking.

Honestly, since I started making this homemade pizza sauce, I haven't looked back. It's become an indispensable part of my weeknight cooking repertoire, saving me precious time and adding a burst of flavor to our meals. So, ditch the jarred stuff and give this recipe a try. It's incredibly easy, incredibly versatile and, most importantly, incredibly delicious.

So what are you waiting for? Grab your ingredients and prepare to elevate your weeknight meals to a whole new level of deliciousness. Trust me, your family will thank you for it, and you'll finally have a simple, go-to sauce that always delivers.

Beyond the pizza:

  • Pasta Perfection: Toss your favorite pasta with this sauce for a quick and easy weeknight meal.
  • Shakshuka Surprise: Add a twist to your shakshuka recipe by using this sauce as the base.
  • Savory Baked Eggs: Pour some sauce into muffin tins, crack an egg into each, and bake for a protein-packed breakfast or brunch.
  • Pizza Toast Upgrade: Take your avocado toast to the next level with this delicious pizza sauce.
  • Roasted Vegetables: Toss roasted vegetables with this sauce for a flavor-packed side dish.

I hope this recipe helps you simplify your cooking and enjoy delicious, homemade meals without the stress. Let me know in the comments how you like it!

Step-by-step

    • Add all of the ingredients to a bowl and stir until well combined.
    • Alternatively, you could blend it up in a food processor.
    • I highly recommend storing the sauce overnight in the fridge the day before you want to use it because the flavor gets SO much better after it's had time to sit.
    • You can use it right away of course, but the true flavor comes through after it's sat overnight.
    • If using as a pizza sauce, just add it to your pre-baked pizza crust, add toppings and bake.
    • If serving over pasta, just simply warm it over the stove first.
    • If serving over toast, you can use it either cold or warm.
    • To make the pizza-style toast as in my photos, add mashed avocado, smoked paprika, black pepper, salt, red pepper flakes and pizza sauce.
