Florence Pizza Dough: A Taste of Italy in Your Kitchen

A Slice of Italy: My Family's Florence Pizza Dough Recipe

The aroma of freshly baked pizza, the satisfying chew of perfectly made dough, the vibrant colors of fresh toppings – these are the memories that transport me back to our unforgettable family trip to Florence, Italy, in 2014. It was during that trip that my mother and I discovered a simple, yet profoundly delicious pizza dough recipe. A recipe so easy, so perfect, that it quickly became a cherished family tradition. It's not some complicated, centuries-old secret passed down through generations; it's a straightforward, adaptable recipe that allows for your personal creative flair. I'm thrilled to share it with you today.

Our Italian adventure wasn’t just about sightseeing; it was about immersing ourselves in the culture. We attended cooking classes, strolled through bustling markets overflowing with fresh produce, and indulged in countless culinary delights. The pizza, of course, held a special place in our hearts. We ate it nearly every day, exploring different variations and styles from rustic trattorias to sophisticated pizzerias. But it was a small, unassuming family-run establishment tucked away on a quiet side street that provided us with our most treasured culinary souvenir: the recipe for their unbelievably easy-to-make pizza dough. We spent hours observing the process, taking notes, and asking questions (with the help of a little translation app!), and returned home with a recipe that we’ve perfected over the years.

What makes this dough so special? It's the simplicity. No fancy ingredients, no complex techniques. Just a few basic pantry staples come together to create a dough that's both incredibly flavorful and wonderfully easy to work with. It's a perfect recipe for beginner bakers, but even seasoned pizza aficionados will appreciate its ease and delicious results. This isn't just a pizza dough; it's a gateway to creating countless culinary experiences, from classic Margherita pizzas to adventurous gourmet creations.

The beauty of this recipe lies in its adaptability. Feel free to experiment with different herbs and spices in the dough itself. A hint of oregano or rosemary can add a lovely depth of flavor. And of course, the topping possibilities are endless! Let your imagination run wild. From the classic combination of tomato sauce, mozzarella, and basil to more adventurous options like roasted vegetables, gourmet cheeses, or even spicy sausage, the variations are limitless.

This recipe isn't just about making pizza; it's about creating memories. It's a recipe that brings my family together, recalling our wonderful trip to Italy and all the delicious moments we shared. Making this pizza dough is a tangible link to that special time in our lives. Now, each time I make this pizza, it isn't just about the delicious final product. It’s about re-experiencing the fun, laughter, and connection we felt during our Italian adventure. I encourage you to try this recipe, and perhaps create some new cherished memories in your own kitchen.

Beyond the Pizza: This pizza dough isn't limited to just pizzas! Get creative. Try using it to make calzones, stromboli, or even breadsticks. The possibilities are truly endless! Step-by-step

    • Mix the Water and Yeast together and allow to foam for a few minutes. Okay to add a teaspoon of sugar, if desired, for the yeast.
    • Make a mountain of flour on a clean counter top. Add the salt and sift with a fork, slowly forming a "well" to pour the water/yeast mixture.
    • Slowly pour half the water/yeast mixture in the well, adding the olive oil - pull the flour/salt into the well.
    • When the ingredients reach a consistency that resembles pancake batter, add the rest of the yeast/water mixture and incorporate more the walls of the mountain into the liquid mixture.
    • Once thick enough to fold with a spatula, mix by scraping and folding until it is thick enough to mix and knead with your hands.
    • Fold and roll the dough over and over - for about 4 to 7 minutes until a nice ball forms.
    • Cut into four pieces, form into nice balls.
    • Place on a clean surface that has been greased with olive oil. Rub olive oil all over the balls (lightly), place a few inches apart and cover with a hot wet towel.
    • Allow to rise for 1 to 1.5 hours.
    • Roll out dough and top as desired (best if sauce and toppings are light).
    • Bake at 450 in the oven or grill on a pizza stone until edges of pizza are lightly browned.
