Homemade Happiness: My Simple Candle-Making Journey

As a busy working mom, finding moments of peace and tranquility feels like a luxury. Between juggling work deadlines, school pick-ups, and endless to-do lists, self-care often takes a backseat. Lately, I've been rediscovering the simple joys – and surprisingly therapeutic benefits – of making my own candles. It all started with a desire for a calming atmosphere in my home, a sanctuary where I could unwind after a long day. The scent of lavender, chamomile, or even a crisp, clean citrus blend instantly transports me to a more peaceful state of mind.

Forget expensive, mass-produced candles filled with artificial fragrances. Making my own candles allows me to control the ingredients, ensuring they’re natural, pure, and safe for my family. The process itself is incredibly meditative. The gentle melting of the beeswax, the careful addition of essential oils, the anticipation as the wax cools and hardens – it’s a mindful experience that slows me down and connects me to a simpler way of living. It's a small act of self-care, yet the impact on my overall well-being is surprisingly significant. The soft glow of candlelight in the evening creates a warm and inviting ambiance, perfect for reading a book, enjoying a cup of tea, or simply unwinding before bed.

Why I chose beeswax: I opted for beeswax for its natural, clean burn and subtle honey-like scent. It's a sustainable choice, as beeswax is a byproduct of honey production. Unlike paraffin wax, beeswax is free from harmful toxins and carcinogens, making it a healthier option for my home and family. The process itself is incredibly satisfying. There's something deeply rewarding about transforming raw materials into something beautiful and functional. The end result isn't just a candle; it's a small token of self-care, a tangible reminder to slow down and appreciate the little things in life.

The essential oil element: The choice of essential oils is where I get to truly personalize my candles. Lavender is my go-to for relaxation; its calming aroma helps me unwind after a stressful day. For a burst of energy, I opt for citrus blends like lemon or grapefruit. And when I need a mood boost, I choose uplifting scents like peppermint or eucalyptus. Experimenting with different essential oil combinations has become a fun and creative outlet. I love creating unique blends to match different moods and occasions. It's like aromatherapy tailored to my needs.

Beyond the practical: This candle-making journey has been more than just a crafting project; it's become a form of self-expression. It’s a way for me to infuse my home with my personality and create a space that truly reflects my mood and preferences. The process has also allowed me to tap into my creativity in a simple, enjoyable way. It's a welcome break from the demands of daily life, a reminder to connect with myself and find joy in the simplest of things. The soft glow of candlelight, the calming aroma of essential oils – these small pleasures bring a sense of peace and serenity to my otherwise busy world. I encourage everyone to try it; it’s a rewarding experience that offers far more than just beautifully scented candles. It's a pathway to self-care, a creative outlet, and a chance to reconnect with yourself.

Tips for beginners: Don't be intimidated by the process; it's much simpler than you think! Start with simple designs and gradually experiment with different scents and containers. Remember, there's no right or wrong way – have fun and enjoy the process! The perfect candle is one that brings you joy and helps create a peaceful atmosphere in your home.

More than just a candle: This isn't just about lighting a wick; it's about creating a mood, setting an intention, and nurturing your well-being. It’s a small act of self-care that yields big rewards – a calming sanctuary in your own home, a moment of mindfulness amidst the chaos, and a tangible expression of self-love. And isn’t that what we all need a little more of?

My favorite essential oil combinations:

  • Relaxation: Lavender, chamomile, and a touch of sweet orange.
  • Energy boost: Lemon, grapefruit, and peppermint.
  • Mood lift: Bergamot, ylang-ylang, and a hint of sandalwood.

So, grab your beeswax, essential oils, and some jars, and embark on your own candle-making journey. You might just surprise yourself with the sense of calm and creativity it unlocks.

Step-by-step

    • Measure out the desired amount of beeswax
    • Place beeswax in metal can
    • Boil water in a sauce pan and place can, with beeswax inside, in the water (to create a double boiler)
    • Allow beeswax to melt
    • While beeswax is melting, set the wicks in the mason jars (or tie the wick to the pencils to let it hang until it touches the bottom of the jar - as shown in the photos)
    • Add essential oils to melted beeswax (add as much or as little as you desire. I generally add enough until I can smell it and then add a bit extra)
    • Pour melted beeswax into mason jars, ensuring wick stays as straight as possible
    • Let beeswax cool for 30 minutes, then cut wick from pencil
    • Allow beeswax and candle to set for several hours or until completely hardened
    • Enjoy!
