Lasagna Al Forno
This lasagna mixes both seasoned ground beef, Italian sausage and fresh herbs to bring a satisfying and filling meal. I like to serve it with my Zesty Garlic Bread on the side and a fresh salad.

Lasagna Al Forno: A Classic Comfort Food

Lasagna Al Forno: A Weeknight Winner

There's something undeniably comforting about a warm, cheesy lasagna. The layers of pasta, rich meat sauce, and creamy ricotta are a symphony of flavors and textures that always hit the spot. For years, I've been making my own version of this classic Italian dish, adapting it to suit my family's tastes and my busy schedule. This isn't your grandmother's lasagna (unless your grandmother was a culinary genius!), but it’s a recipe that's both delicious and surprisingly easy to put together, even on a busy weeknight. I often find myself craving this dish, and it’s become a family favorite that always brings us together. The aroma alone fills the kitchen with warmth and excitement!

What makes my lasagna recipe unique? It’s the combination of seasoned ground beef and Italian sausage. The added depth of flavor from the sausage perfectly complements the richness of the beef. I also use a generous amount of fresh herbs – basil and oregano – which add a bright, fresh element that cuts through the richness of the other ingredients. And, of course, no lasagna is complete without a generous layer of melted mozzarella and Parmesan cheese! My personal touch is incorporating a slightly overlapping layer of noodles to ensure that the lasagna holds its structure beautifully during baking and reheating, ensuring each slice is a perfect bite.

Beyond the flavors, I appreciate how versatile this recipe is. You can easily adjust the meat to your liking; substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option, or even leave out the meat entirely for a vegetarian version. Feel free to experiment with different cheeses, too. Provolone or Fontina would make a delicious addition. The key is to have fun and personalize the recipe to match your taste. The best part? Leftovers are just as delicious (if not more so!) the next day, making this a perfect make-ahead dish for busy weeknights or weekend entertaining. The aroma alone lingering in your kitchen is reward enough for the effort put in!

Beyond the Recipe: Lasagna and My Life

This lasagna isn't just a dish; it's a symbol of home and family for me. Growing up, Sunday dinners always involved a large, comforting meal shared around a table filled with laughter and conversation. Lasagna was a frequent star, and the memories associated with it are just as warm and delicious as the dish itself. Now, as a busy professional, I still find time to make it, as it’s become a tradition of my own, bringing the same sense of comfort and joy to my own family. It reminds me that even in the midst of chaos, there's always time for simple pleasures and delicious food. The making of it is a meditative process for me, a time to disconnect from the demands of everyday life and connect with something creative and nurturing.

I often find myself reflecting on how a simple dish can hold so much meaning. The act of cooking, of carefully layering the ingredients, of sharing the finished product with loved ones – it's all part of a larger ritual that connects us to our heritage and to each other. Lasagna, for me, represents more than just a meal; it represents connection, tradition, and the simple joys of life. I hope that when you make this recipe, it will bring you the same comfort and joy it brings to me and my loved ones. Every slice served is a shared moment of togetherness and satisfaction, a reminder of the warmth and love that surrounds us.

Serving Suggestions

This lasagna is wonderful on its own, but I like to serve it with a simple side salad and some crusty bread to soak up the delicious sauce. A side of garlic bread is particularly delicious, contrasting the richness of the lasagna with a garlicky, buttery crunch. It's also delightful served with a robust red wine, like a Chianti Classico, to complement the flavors of the meat sauce and herbs.

Step-by-step

    • Cook the lasagna noodles in plenty of boiling salted water until pliable and barely tender, about 10 minutes. Stir with a wooden spoon to prevent sticking. Drain the noodles thoroughly, coat with olive oil keep them moist and easy to work with.
    • Coat a large skillet with olive oil. Saute over medium heat, onion, garlic and herbs. Cook 5 minutes. Brown beef and sausage until no longer pink, about 15 minutes. Drain fat into a small container and discard. Stir in the tomato paste completely. Set aside to cool.
    • In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta, parsley and oregano. Stir in beaten eggs. Add Parmesan, season with salt and pepper.
    • To assemble the lasagna: Coat the bottom of a 13 by 9-inch pan with a ladle full of tomato sauce. Arrange 4 noodles lengthwise in a slightly overlapping layer on the sauce. Then, line each end of the pan with a lasagna noodle. This forms a collar that holds in the corners. Spread 1/2 of the meat mixture over the pasta. Dollop 1/2 of the ricotta mixture over the meat, spread to the edges with a spatula. Sprinkle 1/2 of the mozzarella on top of the ricotta. Top with a ladle full of tomato sauce, spread evenly.
    • Repeat with the next layer of noodles, meat, cheeses and sauce. Top last layer with noodles, sauce and shredded mozzarella and Parmesan. Tap the pan to force out air bubbles.
    • Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 1 hour. Remove from oven. Let lasagna rest for 30 minutes so the noodles will settle and cut easily.
    • Cut into 2-inch squares and serve.
