Dutch Potato Poultry Stuffing
For as far as we can trace, all my ancestors were Pennsylvania Dutch. Add to that the fact my father was a potato farmer, and you see why we never had a holiday dinner without potato filling (Pennsylvania Dutch for stuffing)! My husband and I have three grown daughters and seven grandchildren.

A Family Tradition: Dutch Potato Poultry Stuffing

As a homemaker, my life revolves around the comforting rhythm of family traditions. Holidays are especially significant, marking moments of togetherness and the passing down of cherished recipes. This year, I want to share one of our family’s most beloved dishes: Dutch Potato Poultry Stuffing. It’s a recipe steeped in history, carrying the flavors of my Pennsylvania Dutch heritage and the warmth of generations of family gatherings.

My father, a potato farmer, instilled in me a deep appreciation for this humble root vegetable. He always said, “A potato is the heart of a good meal,” and this stuffing is a testament to that belief. It’s not just a side dish; it's the centerpiece of our Thanksgiving and Christmas feasts. The fluffy potatoes, combined with savory bread cubes, herbs, and the rich aroma of roasting poultry, create a symphony of flavors that evoke memories of laughter, love, and family bonds. The recipe itself is simple, yet the result is extraordinary. The secret lies in the careful balance of ingredients and the slow, gentle roasting that allows the flavors to meld and deepen.

Preparing this stuffing is a labor of love, but the joy it brings far outweighs the effort. The simple act of chopping the vegetables, mixing the ingredients, and carefully stuffing the turkey is a meditative process, allowing me to reflect on the blessings in my life. Each year, as I assemble this dish, I think of my father and the generations that came before me, their hands shaping the same dough, their hearts filled with the same anticipation. It's a connection to the past, a celebration of the present, and a legacy to be passed on to the future.

The aroma of the roasting turkey, infused with the earthy scent of the potato stuffing, fills our home with an irresistible warmth. The crackling sound of the skin, the sight of the glistening juices, and the anticipation on my grandchildren’s faces are all part of the magic. This isn’t just food; it’s a tangible representation of the love and care we pour into our family traditions. It’s a dish that nourishes not only our bodies but also our souls.

More than just a recipe, this Dutch Potato Poultry Stuffing is a story, a testament to the enduring power of family, tradition, and the simple joy of sharing a meal together. This Thanksgiving, as you gather around your table, I hope you’ll consider creating your own cherished memories with a dish that carries the warmth and love of generations.

The recipe's simplicity is part of its charm. It’s easily adaptable to suit individual tastes and dietary needs. You can adjust the herbs, add different spices, or even use a different type of bread. The beauty of this recipe lies in its versatility and its ability to evoke feelings of nostalgia and belonging. So, this holiday season, I encourage you to gather your family, gather your ingredients, and gather around a table filled with the aroma and warmth of Dutch Potato Poultry Stuffing. Let the flavors transport you, let the memories unfold, and let the love shared around that table nourish your hearts as deeply as the stuffing nourishes your stomachs.

Step-by-step

    • In a large bowl, combine the potatoes, bread cubes, onion, celery leaves, parsley, butter, salt and pepper.
    • In a small bowl, beat flour and egg substitute.
    • Stir in milk; pour into the potato mixture and mix well. Add more milk if filling seems dry.
    • Just before baking, stuff the turkey. Skewer openings; tie drumsticks together.
    • Place on a rack in a roasting pan.
    • Bake at 325 degrees for 4-1/2 to 5 hours or until a meat thermometer reads 180 degrees for the turkey and 165 degrees for the stuffing.
    • When turkey begins to brown, cover lightly with a tent of aluminum foil and baste if needed.
    • Remove all stuffing.
    • Editor's Note: Stuffing may be baked in a greased 3-qt. covered baking dish at 325 degrees for 70 minutes (uncover for the last 10 minutes). Stuffing yields about 10 cups.
