My Unexpected Culinary Adventure: A Bourbon-Glazed Bacon BLT Story

As a busy working mom, my days are a whirlwind of school runs, conference calls, and the ever-present battle against overflowing laundry baskets. Finding time for anything beyond the basic necessities is a challenge, but even my jam-packed schedule can't completely extinguish my love of food. I find solace and joy in cooking, even if it’s just a simple, delicious meal at the end of a long day. This BLT is one of those simple meals that brings me joy. It started, as many culinary adventures do, with a bit of happy accident and a whole lot of delicious ingredients.

I’d been experimenting with different bacon preparations, trying to move beyond the typical crisp-and-salty standard. A friend had mentioned a bourbon-glazed bacon, and the idea intrigued me. I envisioned that smoky sweetness pairing beautifully with the classic tanginess of a BLT. I knew I wanted something elevated, something beyond the usual lunch fare. This is where the heirloom tomatoes came in. These colorful, flavorful gems added a unique touch to the sandwich and the smoked Gouda brought a beautiful layer of nutty, smoky flavor to the party. And let’s not forget the fried egg—the perfect addition of richness and creamy texture.

The process itself was surprisingly straightforward. The bourbon-maple glaze for the bacon was an easy mix-and-match, though I found the sweet and smoky combination to be remarkably addictive. The careful caramelization of the bacon was, surprisingly, a very meditative experience. The slow cooking on low heat allowed me to focus on the transformation of the bacon, the way the sugar darkened and the bacon softened, and eventually crisped to perfection. Each flip was a small triumph, and the aroma was intoxicating.

The assembly of the sandwich was a visual feast. The vibrant colours of the heirloom tomatoes, the creamy avocado, the crisp bacon, and the golden-yellow fried egg, all nestled between layers of toasted bread, were just begging to be devoured. The smoked Gouda, melted slightly under the broiler, added an extra layer of flavour and richness. The chipotle-bourbon mayo, a quick yet impactful addition, added a smoky, creamy element that tied all the elements together. The overall experience, was a wonderful contrast of texture, from the crunchy bacon and toasty bread to the creamy egg and smooth avocado. The result was, quite simply, a masterpiece.

This BLT transcends the ordinary. It’s a testament to the magic that can happen when you take the time to really savour the cooking process and use high-quality ingredients. It’s the kind of meal that makes you pause, appreciate the simple pleasures of good food, and feel genuinely satisfied. And for a busy working mom, that’s truly something special. It's more than just a sandwich; it’s a small act of self-care, a moment of indulgence amid the chaos of everyday life. It’s a reminder that even in the midst of a hectic schedule, there’s always room for a little bit of culinary creativity and a whole lot of deliciousness.

And believe me, this sandwich is worth every minute of the effort. It’s perfect for a weekend brunch, a luxurious lunch, or even a truly impressive dinner. It’s a showstopper of a sandwich, and the perfect reward for a long, hard day. The combination of sweet, smoky, and savory flavors makes it a truly unforgettable culinary experience. Step-by-step

    • Chipotle-Bourbon Mayo: In a bowl mix together the mayo, chipotle pepper and bourbon. Cover and keep in the fridge until ready to use.
    • BLT'S: In a small bowl mix together the maple syrup, bourbon and cayenne pepper.
    • Place the bacon on a cold griddle or in large skillet. Do not overcrowd the skillet. Heat the skillet to medium-low heat. Once the bacon has cooked for a few minutes and starts to curl, flip the bacon. Brush the top side with the bourbon-maple glaze and sprinkle with fresh black pepper. Continue cooking the bacon over medium-low heat, flipping every few minutes and brushing again with glaze until the bacon is crisp (you will not use all the glaze). If needed, drain some of the grease off during cooking. Try to watch the bacon closely, the sugar will caramelize and the bacon can burn if you do not keep flipping and brushing with the glaze.
    • Remove the bacon from the heat and drain on paper towels. Drizzle a little more glaze over top of the warm bacon.
    • Slice the tomatoes on a cutting board and drizzle with just a little olive oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Let stand 5 minutes.
    • Meanwhile preheat the broiler (and start frying your eggs).
    • Toast the slices of bread lightly in the toaster. Place all slices of bread on a baking sheet. Spread a little chipotle mayo over two slices of bread. Divide the sliced gouda cheese over all four slices of bread. Place under the broiler for 30 seconds or until the cheese is melted. WATCH CLOSELY, they cook quick!
    • Divide the lettuce over the two bottom slices of bread (the ones with the mayo). Add the tomato slices, avocado slices and bacon. Drizzle any remaining bourbon glaze over the bacon (or to your taste). Place an egg over the bacon and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Add the top slice of cheesy bread (cheese side touches the egg). Serve with extra mayo if desired. EAT. Right away!
