Sweet & Spicy Sausage Lasagna: A Weeknight Winner

My Sweet & Spicy Sausage Lasagna: A Family Favorite

As a busy working mom, finding time to cook delicious and satisfying meals can be a challenge. But I've always believed that family dinners are incredibly important, a time to connect, unwind, and share our day. This Sweet & Spicy Sausage Lasagna recipe has become a staple in our house, a perfect balance of comforting flavors and ease of preparation. It's a dish that even my picky eaters gobble up!

The beauty of this lasagna lies in its simplicity. It uses readily available ingredients, and the cooking process is surprisingly straightforward. While the simmering sauce takes some time, it's mostly hands-off, allowing me to attend to other tasks around the house. The combination of sweet and spicy Italian sausage creates a depth of flavor that’s truly irresistible. A hint of sweetness balances the spice, making it enjoyable for everyone. I often double the recipe, making extra for lunch the next day or freezing portions for busy weeknights in the future.

What I love most about this dish is its versatility. You can easily adjust the spice level to your preference by using more or less spicy sausage. You can also add other vegetables, such as mushrooms or bell peppers, for extra texture and flavor. Feel free to experiment! The base recipe is rock-solid, offering a delicious platform for your culinary creativity. I sometimes add a layer of sauteed spinach for extra nutrients and a vibrant green contrast within the lasagna layers. It’s a great way to sneak in extra veggies for the kids, without sacrificing flavor.

The aroma alone is enough to make your mouth water. As the lasagna bakes, the rich tomato sauce and the melted mozzarella cheese fill the kitchen with an inviting scent. There’s nothing quite like pulling a hot, bubbling lasagna from the oven, slicing it into generous portions and serving it to your family. Seeing their happy faces and hearing their satisfied sighs is the ultimate reward. This recipe is more than just food; it's a symbol of love, care, and family time. It’s a reminder of the simple joys in life, the comfort of a home-cooked meal shared with loved ones.

I often serve this lasagna with a side of crusty bread for dipping into the leftover sauce. It’s the perfect way to soak up every last drop of that deliciousness. Sometimes, I pair it with a simple green salad for a lighter accompaniment, providing a refreshing counterpoint to the richness of the lasagna. The possibilities are endless, allowing you to tailor the meal to your family's preferences and dietary needs.

This Sweet & Spicy Sausage Lasagna is not just a recipe; it's a celebration of family, warmth, and the simple pleasures of home-cooked food. It’s a dish that brings people together, and that, to me, is priceless. Give it a try, and I am confident it will quickly become a cherished recipe in your home, too.

Step-by-step

    • Cook your two types of sausage and mix to combine both the sweet and spicy together.
    • Add your onion and garlic to the pan and saute on low to medium heat until cooked through.
    • Drain off excess fat in a colander.
    • Place drained sausage mixture back into pan, and add 2 of the 3 TBS of the chopped parsley, all of the basil, sugar, whole tomatoes and tomato sauce to pan.
    • Bring pan up to a boil, then turn heat down to a low simmer and simmer on stove for 40-45 minutes to blend flavors. Stir occasionally.
    • While sauce mixture is simmering, cook your noodles in salted boiling water until "al dente", which will take about 7-8 minutes. When cooking to "al dente", your pasta should be firm, but not hard. Drain your noodles under cold water to stop the cooking process. Separate noodles for assembling your lasagna.
    • In a medium mixing bowl, add the ricotta, the first 1/4 cup of parmesan, the remaining 1 TBS of parsley and oregano. Mix well and set aside for assembling your lasagna.
    • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
    • To assemble your lasagna, in a non-greased 13 x 9 baking dish, add the following layers: 1 cup of your tomato sauce mixture, 4 lasagna noodles, 1/2 of the ricotta/parmesan cheese mixture, 1 cup of the tomato sauce mixture, 2/3 cup of the mozzarella cheese, 4 more lasagna noodles, remaining ricotta/parmesan cheese mixture, 1 cup of the tomato sauce mixture, another 2/3 cup of the mozzarella cheese, last 4 lasagna noodles, remaining tomato sauce mixture, Remaining mozzarella cheese, Sprinkle 2nd 1/4 cup of the parmesan cheese
    • Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
    • Uncover and bake for another 15 minutes or until hot and bubbly.
    • Let sit out for 15 minutes before slicing and serving. I like to serve this with my Garlic Focaccia bread on the side!
