Alice's Christmas Jam
This lovely jam takes a bit of time but is easy to make. The hardest part is smashing the berries. I love the sweetness from the strawberries, balanced by the slight tartness of the cranberries. The cranberry flavor is subtle. This jam makes great holiday/hostess gifts or can be used on a PB&J.

Alice's Christmas Jam: A Holiday Tradition in the Making

Christmas is a time of year filled with warmth, laughter, and the comforting aroma of freshly baked goods. This year, I decided to add a new element to my holiday baking: Alice's Christmas Jam. It's a recipe passed down (somewhat loosely – I adapted it to my own preferences!), and it’s become a cherished tradition in my family. The process itself is a wonderful sensory experience, from the initial burst of fruity sweetness to the satisfying pop of cranberry skins as they burst open during cooking. The end result? A jar of delicious jam perfect for spreading on toast, adding to yogurt, or gifting to friends and loved ones.

The beauty of this jam lies in its simplicity. It's not a complicated recipe, which is perfect for busy holiday schedules. The ingredients are readily available, and the process is quite straightforward, although a little patience is needed. The hardest part, as many berry-jam makers know, is definitely the initial smashing and mashing of the fruit. That initial stage of breaking down the fruit releases the natural sugars and juices, providing the foundation for a truly flavorful jam. You’ll notice a surprising amount of foam developing during the cooking process, don't worry, most of it will subside. However, if you find that you have an excessive amount, it's best to carefully skim it off just before adding the pectin. This simple step ensures that your jam will have a smooth and glossy finish.

The combination of strawberries and cranberries provides a lovely balance of sweet and tart. The strawberries contribute a vibrant sweetness, while the cranberries add a subtle tanginess that prevents the jam from becoming overly sugary. It's a harmonious blend that's perfect for those who prefer a jam that's not overwhelmingly sweet. The resulting jam is a deep red hue, visually stunning and perfect for gifting. I like to present my jars of jam in small, beautifully wrapped gift bags, adorned with a festive ribbon and a handwritten tag. It's a small gesture, but it means the world to those who receive them. This homemade gift shows care, effort, and a little bit of Christmas magic, making it more meaningful than any store-bought treat.

This year, I’ve made a double batch, more than enough for our family's holiday treats and also plenty to share with our neighbours and friends. The aroma while it simmers on the stove is incredibly inviting; a reminder that even small acts of creating, sharing, and spreading kindness can be the most wonderful aspect of the holiday season. So this Christmas, why not try making your own batch of Alice’s Christmas Jam? It's a delicious and rewarding experience, one that will leave your kitchen smelling delightfully festive and your heart filled with holiday cheer. It’s more than just a recipe; it’s a little bit of home, a little bit of love, and a whole lot of Christmas spirit in every jar.

Beyond the simple joy of making this delicious jam, I also enjoy the process as a form of mindful relaxation. In the midst of the holiday rush, the rhythmic stirring and the anticipation of the finished product create a calming presence. The vibrant colors of the berries and the eventual transformation into a rich, glossy jam bring a sense of peace and satisfaction. It's a welcome respite from the demands of the season and a perfect way to reconnect with myself. This is one of the many reasons why I look forward to making this jam every year. It’s become much more than just a delicious treat. It's a ritual, a quiet moment of reflection amid the holiday bustle, a way to nurture my soul as I prepare for the festivities ahead.

So, whether you're a seasoned jam-maker or a complete beginner, I highly recommend giving Alice’s Christmas Jam a try. The reward is immeasurable, and the flavour is simply divine. It's a recipe that I truly cherish, a testament to the simple pleasures of home cooking and a perfect addition to your Christmas traditions. Happy holidays, and happy jamming!

Step-by-step

    • Place all the berries in a very large pot with the sugar.
    • Cook long enough for the cranberries to break.
    • Use a potato masher to mush up all the fruit, as the frozen strawberry pieces can be quite large. There will be a lot of foam; most will settle, but skim off excess before adding pectin.
    • Add the pectin.
    • Bring to a full rolling boil and stir continuously for 2 minutes.
    • Skim off any foam.
    • Remove from heat and let cool 5 minutes.
    • Pour into clean, sterilized jars, leaving 1/4" at the top of each jar.
    • Put on caps and process for 15 minutes in a hot water bath.
    • Let cool upside down overnight, ensuring each jar is securely closed.
    • Note: If your pot isn't large enough to hold all the berries (you need lots of space when they bubble), halve the recipe and use 2 pouches of liquid pectin.
