Easy Pierogie Dinner: A Weeknight Winner

As a busy mom, I'm always on the lookout for quick, easy, and delicious meals that the whole family will enjoy. This Easy Pierogie Dinner recipe is a lifesaver! It’s incredibly simple, requiring minimal ingredients and even less cleanup – a huge plus on a busy weeknight. The combination of savory pierogies, tender cabbage, and sweet apples is unexpectedly delightful. This recipe easily feeds six to eight people, making it perfect for family gatherings or potlucks. I often make a double batch and have leftovers for lunch the next day – it reheats beautifully!

The beauty of this dish lies in its versatility. Feel free to experiment with different types of pierogies – potato and cheese are a classic, but you could also try sauerkraut and mushroom for a different flavour profile. Similarly, you can adjust the vegetables to your liking. Adding some carrots or zucchini would add extra nutrients and colour. Even the ham can be substituted with sausage or bacon for a heartier meal. The core concept remains the same: simple cooking techniques that yield big flavour. The key is to get that perfect balance of crispy pierogies, tender cabbage, and caramelized onions and apples. The entire process takes less than 30 minutes, which makes it ideal for those short-on-time weeknights. It's a satisfying and comforting meal that never disappoints. The best part? The cleanup is a breeze! One pan, minimal dishes – that's a win-win in my book.

Tips and Tricks for Perfect Pierogies:

  • Don't overcrowd the pan when sautéing the pierogies; work in batches to ensure even browning.
  • If you prefer a crispier pierogi, you can add a little extra butter to the pan.
  • Adjust the cooking time for the cabbage based on your preference. Some people like it slightly more tender, while others prefer a bit of a crunch.
  • Feel free to experiment with different seasonings. Adding a pinch of garlic powder, paprika, or black pepper can enhance the flavour of the cabbage.
  • This dish is also delicious served with a dollop of sour cream or a side of your favorite dipping sauce.

I often find that the simplest recipes are the most satisfying. This Easy Pierogie Dinner proves just that. It's a testament to the fact that you don't need complicated techniques or a long list of ingredients to create a truly delicious meal. Enjoy!

Step-by-step

    • Boil the bag of pierogies in a pan of boiling water. Swish them around, and when they float to the top they are done. Then take them out and lay them on an inverted lid on a skillet that is held up on a bowl. Dump the water out.
    • Now saute in the butter back in the empty skillet that has melted butter in it. Usually takes 2 rounds to saute all of them. Don't over fry. Just golden brown on both sides.
    • Fried Cabbage & Ham
    • Chop medium apples.
    • Chop a medium onion.
    • Chop 1/2 head of cabbage.
    • Use 1/2 stick of butter.
    • Cut ham steaks into 8 quarter slices.
    • Melt butter in a skillet and saute the onions & apples. Next add the chopped cabbage to the mix. Toss it around & add salt, put the lid on, and cook for about 5-10 minutes until it starts to wilt in the skillet.
    • Add sliced ham steaks to the cabbage mix. Steam with the lid on and then serve on a plate with your sauteed pierogies. Enjoy!
