My Favorite Frittata: A Taste of Spain and Italy

As a busy working mom, I’m always on the lookout for recipes that are both delicious and easy to make. This Sausage Frittata, inspired by my time living in Spain, hits the mark perfectly. It’s a delightful fusion of Spanish tortilla and Italian frittata techniques, resulting in a hearty and flavorful dish that's perfect for any occasion.

My Spanish adventures three years ago instilled a deep love for the classic Spanish tortilla. Those simple yet incredibly satisfying potato and egg concoctions were a staple in my diet. However, recreating that perfect texture at home proved to be more challenging than I anticipated. The Spanish method, while authentic, requires a certain finesse I hadn't yet mastered. That’s when I decided to experiment, blending the Spanish ingredients with the more forgiving Italian frittata method. The result is a recipe that’s both easy to follow and delivers that satisfying, comforting taste I craved.

The Beauty of Simplicity

This recipe is all about the wonderful interplay of textures and flavors. The slightly crispy hash browns provide a satisfying crunch, while the fluffy eggs offer a delicate contrast. The savory sausage adds a depth of flavor, perfectly complemented by the melty cheese. It's a symphony of tastes and textures that will leave you wanting more. And the best part? It’s incredibly versatile!

Adaptability is Key

One of the things I love most about this recipe is its adaptability. Feel free to experiment with different types of sausage – Italian sausage, chorizo, or even vegetarian sausage would all work wonderfully. You can also customize the cheese to your liking. I personally adore the four-cheese Mexican blend, but cheddar, Monterey Jack, or even a simple mozzarella would be equally delicious. The beauty of this recipe lies in its ability to adapt to your preferences and available ingredients.

More Than Just a Meal

Beyond its deliciousness, this Sausage Frittata is incredibly convenient. It's a fantastic make-ahead dish, perfect for busy weeknights or weekend brunches. Prepare it ahead of time, and you'll have a quick and satisfying meal ready to go whenever you need it. I often make a larger batch on Sunday and enjoy it throughout the week for lunches or quick dinners. It's equally satisfying served warm, at room temperature, or even cold, making it a versatile option for any occasion.

From Breakfast to Dinner and Beyond

This frittata isn't confined to just one meal. It makes a fantastic breakfast, a delightful brunch dish, a light lunch, or even a satisfying dinner. Cut it into elegant pie slices for a formal gathering or into smaller squares for a casual appetizer. The possibilities are endless!

The Perfect Blend of Cultures

This Sausage Frittata is more than just a recipe; it’s a culinary journey. It's a testament to the beautiful fusion of flavors and techniques from different cultures, a reminder that sometimes, the most satisfying dishes are born from unexpected combinations. It's a dish that brings together the best of both worlds, creating a culinary experience that’s both comforting and exciting.

A Recipe for Life's Moments

In the end, this recipe is about more than just food; it’s about creating memories and enjoying delicious meals with the people you love. Whether it’s a cozy weekend brunch or a quick weeknight dinner, this Sausage Frittata is a dish that’s sure to become a staple in your kitchen, just as it has in mine. So, gather your ingredients, put on your apron, and get ready to experience the magic of this simple yet extraordinary recipe.

Step-by-step

    • Crumble Sausage and brown with onion and remove from pan.
    • Drain on paper towel to remove excess oils.
    • Using same pan, brown Simply Potatoes hashbrowns according to package instructions (note: you are looking for color here, so it is more important to fry some crispness in than to try and hold hashbrowns together.)
    • Add sausage and onion into potatoes and mix thoroughly.
    • Scramble 12 eggs and pour over sausage and potato mixture.
    • Allow to cook on stove top for 5 to 10 minutes, moving gently but constantly, to allow egg to flow to bottom of frying pan.
    • When mixture appears to be cooked about half way up the side of the pan, remove from burner and place in pre-heated 350? oven for approximately 15 minutes or until egg sets completely.
    • Remove from oven and add cheese, bake another 5 minutes until cheese is melted and browning.
    • I use a concave, non-stick frying pan for this recipe and on removing from oven and allowing 5 minutes or so to cool, I can loosen from the pan and it will slide out onto a plate.
    • Cut into pie slices, will serve 8.
    • Can also be cut into small squares for appetizers.
    • Can be served hot, room temp or cold.
