My Unexpected Culinary Adventure: Apple Cider Pulled Pork Perfection

As a busy mom juggling work, carpools, and everything in between, finding time for elaborate cooking is often a pipe dream. Weekends are usually reserved for catching up on chores and spending quality time with the family. But lately, I've been feeling the need to reconnect with my creative side, and what better way to do so than by experimenting in the kitchen? The simple act of preparing a meal, from choosing the ingredients to savoring the final product, is incredibly therapeutic for me. It's a way to de-stress and appreciate the simple pleasures in life.

This weekend, I decided to challenge myself with a recipe I found online – Apple Cider Barbecue Pulled Pork. Now, I'm not exactly a grill master; in fact, my grilling experience is limited, but I'm always up for a good challenge. The recipe sounded delicious, a perfect blend of sweet and savory, and the thought of tender, juicy pulled pork filled me with anticipation. The preparation was surprisingly straightforward, involving a simple brine that required minimal effort. I marinated the pork overnight, and let me tell you, waking up to the aroma of simmering apple cider and spices was an absolute treat. It felt luxurious, yet simple. That's something I truly love.

The actual grilling process was a little more involved than I anticipated. It took longer than expected, about 5-6 hours. But let me tell you, it was worth every minute. The slow cooking resulted in incredibly tender pork that practically fell apart at the touch. The subtle sweetness of the apple cider perfectly complemented the savory notes of the barbecue sauce, creating a harmonious flavor profile that had everyone reaching for seconds. The combination of the slightly tangy Carolina mustard barbecue sauce and the soft buns made it feel like a celebration in every bite. It was a perfect Sunday dinner, and a great bonding experience for us.

More than just a delicious meal, this pulled pork adventure reminded me of the joy of creating something special from scratch. The satisfaction of transforming simple ingredients into a culinary masterpiece is unparalleled. It's a reminder that even amidst the chaos of everyday life, there's always time to nurture our passions, to find joy in the little things, and to share delicious food with those we love. It allowed me to create a memorable family time around the aroma and taste of this outstanding dish.

The entire process, from marinating to serving, was more than just cooking; it became a meditation. The slow, methodical steps, the attention to detail, the anticipation of the final result – it was all a part of a deeply relaxing and rewarding experience. And the best part? My family absolutely loved it. It was such a hit, that I plan to make this a staple in our weekend meal rotation. It's a dish that's both impressive and surprisingly easy to make, a perfect balance of taste and convenience. It feels like a triumph over a busy schedule and a well-deserved treat. The perfect result from a housewife's perspective, and a recipe I will surely cherish for years to come.

Step-by-step

    • Rinse pork roast under cold running water.
    • In large oven bag or airtight container, combine apple cider, water, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and salt. Mix until sugar and salt have dissolved.
    • Add pork, cover, and refrigerate (overnight is best).
    • When you're ready to cook your pork, preheat grill to 225 degrees F.
    • If you have a meat injector, take some of the brine and inject it into the roast (I don't have one so I didn't do this, but it would have been awesome).
    • Remove the roast from the brine mixture but save it for the cooking process.
    • Mix up the one spoon dry rub and generously cover your roast using all of it.
    • Put the roast on the grill with the fat side up and cook for 3 hours.
    • After each full hour, use a silicon brush to mop the brine liquid onto the roast to keep it moist.
    • You can discard the brine after the first 3 hours of roasting.
    • Use an aluminum foil pan or make a boat out of heavy-duty aluminum foil and place the roast on top.
    • Increase the temperature to 250 degrees F and roast until the internal temperature reaches 150 degrees F, about 5-6 hours total.
    • Transfer the roast to a cutting board and allow to rest for at least 20 minutes.
    • Transfer any of the cooking juices in your foil to a measuring cup.
    • When the meat is cool enough to handle, separate the tender meat from the bone and fat.
    • Spoon off any fat that has risen to the top of the cooking liquid or use one of those measuring cups that pours from the bottom.
    • Moisten shredded meat with cooking liquid.
    • Serve with soft buns and Carolina mustard barbecue sauce along with some coleslaw.
