My Easy Instant Pot Applesauce: A Busy Mom's Secret Weapon

Life as a working mom is a whirlwind. Between early morning school runs, demanding deadlines at the office, after-school activities, and dinner prep, finding time for anything beyond the bare minimum often feels impossible. One area that frequently gets squeezed is making healthy, homemade meals. We often resort to convenience foods, knowing they’re not the best choice but succumbing to the pressure of time.

That’s why I’ve become a huge fan of the Instant Pot. This amazing appliance has revolutionized my cooking, allowing me to whip up nutritious and delicious meals in a fraction of the time it used to take. One of my favorite go-to recipes is Instant Pot applesauce. It's unbelievably simple, requires minimal ingredients, and delivers a healthy, comforting treat that's perfect for breakfast, snacks, or dessert.

Why This Recipe Works:

This Instant Pot applesauce recipe is a game-changer for busy individuals like me. It eliminates the need for tedious stovetop simmering, saving me precious time and effort. The Instant Pot's pressure cooking capabilities ensure perfectly cooked, tender apples every single time. Forget about constantly stirring or monitoring the pot; simply set it and forget it!

Beyond the Basics: Customization is Key

While the basic recipe is straightforward, I encourage you to experiment with different flavors and spices to personalize your applesauce. A dash of vanilla extract adds a subtle sweetness, while a pinch of allspice creates a warm, comforting aroma. For a richer flavor, try adding a tablespoon of maple syrup or brown sugar. You can also adjust the cooking time depending on the type of apples you’re using. For firmer apples, you might need a slightly longer cooking time. Experiment to find your perfect balance.

Applesauce Applications: Beyond the Bowl

The possibilities with homemade applesauce are endless! It’s wonderful on its own, but its versatility extends far beyond a simple snack. Consider these creative applications:

  • Breakfast Boost: Add a spoonful to your morning oatmeal or yogurt for a fiber and flavor boost.
  • Baking Buddy: Use it as a healthier alternative to oil or butter in baked goods like muffins or cakes.
  • Savory Surprise: Believe it or not, applesauce can also enhance savory dishes! Try it as a glaze for pork chops or as a component of a unique chutney.
  • Creative Cocktails: For a grown-up treat, try mixing applesauce into a festive autumn cocktail. The possibilities are endless!
  • A Simple Dessert: A warm bowl of cinnamon-spiced applesauce on a chilly evening is utterly delightful. It's the perfect comfort food without the guilt.

Storage and Shelf Life:

Once your applesauce has cooled completely, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week. You can also freeze it for longer storage; simply let it thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving.

Making applesauce in the Instant Pot is more than just a recipe; it's a time-saving strategy, a healthy habit, and a delightful way to enjoy the flavors of autumn. It's a small act of self-care in a busy life, proving that even amidst chaos, there's always room for a delicious, homemade treat. So, give this recipe a try – your taste buds (and your schedule) will thank you!

Tips and Tricks for Perfect Applesauce:

  • Apple Selection: Use a mix of apples for optimal flavor and texture. Granny Smith apples offer tartness, while Honeycrisp apples provide sweetness. Experiment with different combinations to find your perfect blend.
  • Spice it Up: Don't be afraid to experiment with different spices! A pinch of cloves, allspice, or ginger can add a unique flavor profile to your applesauce.
  • Smooth or Chunky? Use an immersion blender for a perfectly smooth applesauce or leave it chunky for a rustic texture. The choice is yours!
  • Natural Sweetness: If you prefer a sweeter applesauce, consider adding a touch of maple syrup or honey to taste.
  • Adjust Cooking Time: The cooking time may vary depending on the type of apple and your desired consistency. Check the apples regularly to ensure they're cooked to your preference. If your apples are still firm, add an extra minute or two of pressure cooking.

In conclusion, my Instant Pot applesauce recipe is more than just a simple recipe; it’s a testament to efficient cooking and the joy of making something delicious and healthy from scratch. Even on the busiest of days, taking a little time to create something wholesome can make all the difference. Give it a whirl, and let me know how you like it!

Step-by-step

    • Peel, core and quarter the apples. You may leave the peel on, I just like them removed.
    • Transfer apples to the inner pot of the IP along with water.
    • Add cinnamon powder and nutmeg powder.
    • Close the lid of the IP. Press manual button and cook on high pressure for 7 minutes.
    • Once done, wait for additional 6-7 minutes and then release the remaining pressure manually. The apples will be thoroughly cooked by then.
    • Your applesauce is done. If you prefer a smooth consistency applesauce, you may blend the sauce using an immersion blender at this point (I did this).
    • Let the applesauce cool completely and then store it an airtight container in the refrigerator.
