My Morning Delight: The Bacon, Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Braid

Mornings can be hectic, especially when you’re juggling work, family, and everything in between. Finding time for a proper breakfast often feels like a luxury, yet a nourishing start to the day sets the tone for everything that follows. That's why I’ve become a huge fan of make-ahead breakfasts, and this Bacon, Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Braid has become a weekly staple in my household. It's not just quick and easy, it's incredibly flavorful and satisfying, a true crowd-pleaser that's perfect for busy week mornings, or even a relaxed weekend brunch.

The beauty of this braid lies in its versatility. You can easily adapt it to your preferences. Don’t like turkey sausage? Substitute with your favorite breakfast sausage. Want to add some spinach or peppers for extra nutrients? Go for it! The basic recipe is a great foundation that allows for endless customization, making it a perfect meal prep option. I often double the recipe, bake one braid for the week, and freeze the other for a quick breakfast later on. Reheating is simple – just pop it in the microwave or oven until warm. The combination of salty bacon, savory sausage, fluffy eggs, and melted cheddar cheese is simply irresistible, making it the ultimate comfort food breakfast.

Preparing the braid itself is also incredibly therapeutic. The process of braiding the dough is strangely calming. I often find myself looking forward to the weekend not just for the leisurely brunch itself, but for the quiet time spent in the kitchen creating this delicious breakfast treat. This recipe is a testament to how simple, delicious meals can easily fit into even the busiest schedules. It's a fantastic way to start the day feeling both nourished and satisfied, leaving me with plenty of energy to tackle whatever challenges the day may bring. So, give this Bacon, Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Braid a try and let me know what you think! I'm sure it will quickly become a breakfast favorite in your home, too.

Beyond the sheer deliciousness, the braid also offers a wonderful opportunity for family involvement. Kids, especially, love helping in the kitchen, and the act of braiding the dough is a fun and engaging activity. This recipe is a wonderful way to bond with your family while creating a delicious meal. The satisfaction of enjoying a beautiful breakfast, made with your own two hands (and maybe a little help from the little ones), is unbeatable.

Finally, let’s talk about leftovers. While this braid is rarely around long enough for leftovers, if you do happen to have any, the reheated braid is just as delicious, if not more so! The flavors seem to meld together even more beautifully after a night in the fridge. This makes it an even more efficient breakfast option. Prepare it once, and enjoy it twice!

I hope you find this recipe as delightful and stress-relieving as I do. Happy cooking!

Step-by-step

    • Pre-heat your oven to 375.
    • Cook the bacon according to package directions and set aside on paper towels to drain. Crumble or chop the bacon when drained.
    • In a mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey with the salt, black pepper, sage, thyme, marjoram and crushed red pepper. Stir (or mush with your hands or a fork) until the turkey is well combined with the seasonings.
    • Mist a nonstick skillet with cooking spray and bring to medium heat.
    • Add the seasoned turkey and cook, breaking up with a wooden spoon, until the turkey is cooked through and broken into bite-sized pieces.
    • Remove the turkey to a side plate and wipe out the skillet with a paper towel.
    • While the turkey is cooking, break the eggs into a mixing bowl and beat together.
    • Add a splash of water and stir to combine.
    • When the turkey is done, mist the skillet with cooking spray and bring over med-low heat.
    • Add the eggs and cook, using a spatula to move the eggs around, scrapping the thin layer of cooked eggs off the bottom until all the eggs are cooked and fluffy.
    • Set aside.
    • Unroll the pizza dough onto a piece of parchment paper and roll the dough to be 10”x14”.
    • Using a pizza cutter or a sharp knife, make cuts up one of the longer sides of the dough, about 1 inch apart and about 3 inches long (into the center).
    • Mirror those cuts on the opposite long side of the dough.
    • Spread the turkey mixture down the center of the pizza dough, in a row with the cuts on either side.
    • Top the turkey sausage with the scrambled eggs, chopped bacon and shredded cheddar.
    • Starting at one end, fold a strip of the sliced dough on the side diagonally over the center ingredients.
    • Fold the strip across from it over that strip in a criss-cross and repeat, alternating sides, until the strips of dough are covering the center in a braided pattern.
    • Brush the top of the braid with the melted butter.
    • Transfer the parchment paper with the braid onto a baking sheet and bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes until the dough is golden.
    • Slice into 8 equal pieces and serve.
