Homemade Peanut Butter: A Busy Mom's Best Friend

Life as a working mom is a whirlwind. Between early mornings, school runs, work deadlines, and evening chores, finding time for anything beyond the bare essentials feels like a luxury. But one thing I've learned is that even amidst the chaos, little moments of self-care and homemade goodness can make all the difference. And that's where my simple homemade peanut butter recipe comes in.

I used to think making peanut butter from scratch was a monumental task, something reserved for weekend culinary adventures. The truth? It's surprisingly quick and easy. And the taste? Oh my goodness, it's worlds apart from anything you'll find in the store. The richness, the subtle sweetness of the roasted peanuts, the satisfying creaminess – it's pure indulgence in a jar. This recipe has become a staple in my kitchen, a little slice of homemade heaven I can easily whip up even on the busiest of weekdays.

Why Homemade? Besides the superior taste, making your own peanut butter gives you complete control over the ingredients. No added sugars, preservatives, or questionable additives. Just pure, roasted peanuts and a pinch of salt. It’s a healthier, more satisfying alternative, and knowing exactly what goes into your food offers a level of comfort and peace of mind, particularly important when feeding a family.

Beyond the Sandwich: While a classic peanut butter sandwich is always a winner, especially with my kids, I've found countless ways to use my homemade peanut butter. It's a delicious addition to smoothies, a creamy base for sauces, a sweet treat when paired with banana slices, and a surprisingly versatile ingredient in baking. The possibilities are truly endless.

The Simplicity Factor: The best part? This recipe is incredibly forgiving. Don't worry about perfectly roasting the peanuts; a little charring adds to the flavor. And the processing time is flexible. A food processor will do the trick, but a high-speed blender with a tamper makes the process even faster. You can even adjust the salt according to your preference.

A Little Bit of Luxury: In our fast-paced lives, taking the time to create something from scratch offers a sense of grounding and accomplishment. The aroma of roasting peanuts fills the kitchen with warmth, creating a cozy atmosphere. The simple act of making my own peanut butter reminds me to slow down, appreciate the little things, and prioritize those small moments of self-care.

More Than Just Peanut Butter: Making this peanut butter is more than just creating a delicious spread; it's about creating a connection to my food, a connection to my family, and a connection to myself. It's a small act of rebellion against the convenience of pre-packaged foods, a statement of self-sufficiency and a testament to the power of simple, homemade goodness. It’s a small act of love, disguised as a jar of creamy peanut butter.

Passing on the Legacy: One day, I hope my children will cherish this recipe as much as I do. I envision them making their own batches of peanut butter, sharing the joy of homemade goodness with their own families. It’s a legacy I’m proud to pass down, a small tradition that binds generations together through the simple pleasure of a perfectly crafted jar of peanut butter.

So, the next time you find yourself caught in the whirlwind of daily life, consider making a batch of this homemade peanut butter. It's a small act of self-care, a delicious treat, and a reminder that even amidst the chaos, there’s always time for a little homemade love.

Step-by-step

    • Pre-heat the oven to 350F degrees.
    • Spread the peanuts on a baking sheet and roast for about 20 minutes, stirring half way through to make sure they do not BURN (don't worry I've burnt them many times also).
    • Once the nuts are done roasting, let them cool for about 10 minutes.
    • You can then easily slip off the skins, but I find that they do not really make a difference in taste or texture, so you can leave them on.
    • Next, add the peanuts to a food processor or a high speed blender with a plunger attachment.
    • Sprinkle in the salt and process for about 5-10 minutes, scraping the sides as necessary.
    • You can tell when the peanuts have turned to butter, they will release their oil and become really smooth and creamy.
    • If you are using a high speed blender, use the frozen dessert setting while pushing the peanuts down into the blades with the plunger, this only took about 1 minute for mine to finish.
    • Once your nut butter is done, keep it in a glass jar in the refrigerator.
    • Enjoy!
