The aroma of warm cinnamon and sugar hangs heavy in the air, a comforting embrace that whisks me away to simpler times. It's the scent of my grandmother's kitchen, a haven of warmth and delicious smells. Today, I'm sharing a recipe that brings back those cherished memories - my take on classic cinnamon buns. They're not just a treat; they're a journey back to childhood, a reminder of simpler pleasures, and a delicious way to spend a cozy afternoon.

Baking, for me, has always been more than just following a recipe. It's a form of self-expression, a creative outlet that allows me to pour my heart into every ingredient, every carefully measured spoonful. The rhythmic kneading of the dough, the satisfying spread of the cinnamon-sugar filling, the anticipation of the golden-brown bake – it's a meditative process, a mindful escape from the daily grind. And let’s be honest, the end result – those soft, fluffy buns, generously coated in sweet icing – is the perfect reward for the effort.

This particular recipe holds a special place in my heart. It's a family heirloom, passed down through generations, tweaked and perfected over time. There's something deeply satisfying about using a recipe that’s been loved and cherished by so many before me. It’s more than just a set of instructions; it’s a legacy, a tangible connection to those who came before. And each time I bake these buns, I feel a sense of continuity, a connection to my roots.

Beyond the nostalgic value, these cinnamon buns are simply irresistible. The soft, pillowy dough, infused with the warmth of cinnamon and the sweetness of brown sugar, is a pure delight. The possibilities are endless! But whatever variations you choose, the core remains the same: a love for baking, a pinch of nostalgia, and a whole lot of deliciousness.

Happy baking!

Step-by-step

    • To make the dough: Mix as for bread, place in greased bowl in fridge for 30 minutes or overnight.
    • Roll out to 10x16 inch rectangle
    • For the filling: Spread melted butter on dough.
    • Sprinkle with mixture of brown sugar and cinnamon, then raisins, can also use chopped walnuts.
    • Roll up dough to 16 inch log and seal edges by brushing with beaten egg, then slice into 12 squares.
    • Place on baking tray so they are not touching.
    • Sprinkle with water and sit them in a warm place for 30 minutes or until nearly doubled in size.
    • Brush with remaining beaten egg.
    • Bake at 180-190c for 15-20 minutes.
    • Mix the icing together and spread on the buns when they are cool.
