Homemade Granola: A Busy Woman's Perfect Breakfast

My Go-To Granola Recipe: Simple, Delicious, and Perfect for Busy Mornings

As a working mom, time is my most precious commodity. Finding healthy and satisfying breakfast options that don't require hours of prep is crucial. That's why I've perfected this homemade granola recipe – it's quick, easy, and incredibly versatile. Gone are the days of reaching for sugary, processed cereals. This granola is my secret weapon for a nutritious and delicious start to each day, fueling me for a busy workday.

I've always been a fan of granola, but store-bought options often fall short. They're loaded with added sugars, artificial flavors, and sometimes, ingredients I can't even pronounce. Taking control of my granola making became a priority. Not only did it give me the satisfaction of creating something delicious from scratch, but it also allowed me to customize the ingredients to perfectly suit my taste and dietary needs. Now, I can easily adjust the sweetness level, add in my favorite nuts and seeds, and even swap out dried fruits depending on what’s in season or on sale at the local farmer’s market. It's become a weekly ritual, a small act of self-care that makes a big difference in my overall well-being.

The magic of this recipe lies in its simplicity. There's no need for fancy equipment or specialized ingredients. Just a few pantry staples and a little bit of time are all you need. The process itself is incredibly therapeutic; the satisfying crunch of the oats and nuts as they toast in the oven is almost meditative. And the best part? The aroma that fills my kitchen while it bakes is utterly irresistible. The whole family enjoys this granola, from my youngest to my husband.

Beyond breakfast, this granola is incredibly versatile. I love sprinkling it over yogurt, adding it to smoothies for extra texture and nutrition, or enjoying it as a simple, healthy snack. The possibilities are truly endless. It's the perfect addition to a quick lunch, adding a satisfying crunch to a simple salad. It’s also a great addition to trail mix when I have to go hiking. I often take a small portion in a reusable bag when I go for a run, making sure I keep my energy levels up. It's also perfect for packing in school lunches.

Making granola at home has become so much more than just a way to get a healthy breakfast; it's a reminder to myself to take the time to do things with love and care. It's a simple act that brings me joy and nourishes my body and soul. The feeling of making something from scratch is incredibly rewarding, and sharing it with my loved ones only makes it better. I highly recommend you give it a try!

Tips for Granola Success:

  • Use good quality ingredients: The flavor of your granola will depend greatly on the quality of your ingredients. Use the best oats, nuts, seeds, and dried fruits you can find.
  • Don't overbake: Overbaked granola will be hard and dry. Keep a close eye on it while it's baking and remove it from the oven as soon as it's lightly golden brown.
  • Let it cool completely: Before storing your granola, let it cool completely to prevent it from becoming soggy.
  • Store properly: Store your granola in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. It will stay fresh for several weeks.
  • Get creative with your additions: Feel free to experiment with different nuts, seeds, dried fruits, and spices to create your own unique granola blend.

Making this granola is not just about making a breakfast; it's about creating a moment of calm in a busy day, savoring the simple act of creating something delicious and nourishing. And that, my friends, is a recipe for a happy life.

Step-by-step

    • Preheat oven to 165C/325F
    • In a large bowl, add the oats, sunflower seeds, pepitas, pecans, almonds, coconut, walnuts, and cashews and set aside.
    • In a large pot, add the maple syrup, honey, oil, sugar, vanilla, and brown sugar and bring to a boil.
    • Boil for 5 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
    • Pour the hot mixture over the oats, seeds, and nuts and stir to coat.
    • Place on baking sheets lined with foil or baking paper and bake for 20 minutes.
    • About halfway through baking, stir the granola to ensure all the granola gets toasted.
    • When the granola is light brown, remove from the oven and mix in the sultanas, cranberries, and apricots (or other dried fruit).
    • When completely cool, place your granola in an airtight container. It should last two weeks.
