Breakfast Strata: A Busy Mom's Delight

Breakfast Strata: My Go-To Weekend Brunch

As a busy mom of three, finding time to prepare a delicious and satisfying breakfast is a constant juggling act. Weekdays are a whirlwind of school drop-offs, work deadlines, and after-school activities. Weekends, however, are sacred. They're a time for family, relaxation, and—of course—a leisurely brunch. That's where my beloved Breakfast Strata comes in. This recipe is a lifesaver, allowing me to create a show-stopping brunch with minimal hands-on time.

The beauty of this strata lies in its versatility and make-ahead capabilities. I can prep it the night before, leaving me free to enjoy my morning coffee and spend quality time with my kids instead of being stuck in the kitchen. The result is a warm, comforting dish that's packed with flavor and perfect for sharing. Whether it's a relaxed weekend gathering or a special occasion, this strata always impresses.

Why I Love This Recipe:

  • Make-ahead magic: The majority of the prep work is done the night before, leaving you with minimal work on the day of.
  • Flavor flexibility: The beauty of this recipe is its adaptability. I regularly change up the ingredients based on what I have on hand. Sometimes I add spinach and feta, other times it's roasted vegetables and different cheeses. The combinations are endless!
  • Crowd-pleaser: This strata always gets rave reviews. It’s hearty, flavorful, and everyone loves it.
  • Minimal cleanup: Using one casserole dish simplifies the cooking and cleaning process considerably.

Tips and Variations:

  • Bread choices: While the recipe calls for stale white bread, I often use focaccia or sourdough for a more flavorful experience. The key is to use bread that’s a bit stale – this helps prevent the strata from becoming soggy.
  • Cheese selection: Get creative with your cheese choice! Cheddar, Gruyere, Monterey Jack – experiment and find your favorite combination. I often use whatever cheese I have on hand, ensuring the flavours complement each other.
  • Add-ins: The filling possibilities are vast. Sautéed mushrooms, bell peppers, spinach, bacon, sausage – feel free to customize the filling to your liking. I often incorporate leftover roasted vegetables for a quick and flavourful addition.
  • Herb options: Fresh herbs add an extra layer of deliciousness. Parsley is a classic choice, but dill, chives, or thyme also work well.
  • Spice it up: A pinch of red pepper flakes adds a nice kick, particularly if you’re using milder cheeses.

This Breakfast Strata isn't just a recipe; it's a testament to efficient cooking and creating lasting memories. It’s a dish that embodies the spirit of effortless elegance, proving that a truly special breakfast doesn't require hours of slaving away in the kitchen. So, give it a try. You won't regret it.

Beyond the Brunch Table: This strata is remarkably versatile. Leftovers are just as delicious cold, making it a perfect grab-and-go breakfast or lunch. It also travels well, so it’s a great option for potlucks and brunch gatherings. With its adaptable nature and make-ahead convenience, this recipe has become a staple in my home, offering a consistent source of comfort, convenience, and deliciousness.

Step-by-step

    • In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, Dijon, milk, heavy cream, and mustard until combined.
    • Whisk in 1 tablespoon fresh minced herbs and onion.
    • Depending on your filling ingredients, add 1 teaspoon salt and ½ teaspoon pepper. If using already well-salted ingredients, salt to taste.
    • Place your bread, cheese, and filling ingredients in easy reach for assembling.
    • In a large, greased casserole dish, distribute ½ of the bread.
    • Add ⅔ of the filling ingredients and ⅔ of the shredded cheese.
    • Toss lightly.
    • Pour ½ of the egg custard mixture over, making sure to coat ingredients evenly.
    • Add remaining bread cubes and the rest of the filling.
    • Cover with remaining custard mixture. At this point, everything should look well-soaked, and you should notice a bit of custard pooling at the bottom. If mixture appears dry, whisk another egg with ¼ cup milk and pour over.
    • Top strata with remaining shredded cheese and fresh herbs.
    • Cover with plastic wrap and chill overnight.
    • The next morning, preheat oven to 375F.
    • Once heated, bake strata uncovered for about 45 minutes to one hour.
    • If needed, tent with aluminum the last 15 minutes to prevent over-browning.
    • The strata is finished when the custard is set and puffed, with no liquid remaining.
    • Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
