BLT Sandwich
The simple BLT (bacon, lettuce, and tomato) sandwich shouldnt be poo pooed as too simple to be worthy of much cooking thought. Fresh summer produce and locally raised bacon can make the BLT an extraordinary sandwich. I often add all sorts of other veggies to my BLTs. Cucumbers, red onion, arugula, are all worthy additions. Sometimes I add pickled jalapeos or sweet pickles to give the sandwich a little zing. I also really like to serve my BLTs with dill pickle spears.

The Humble BLT: A Culinary Masterpiece in Simplicity

The Unexpected Joy of the Perfect BLT

As a busy working mom, time is a luxury I don't often have. My days are a whirlwind of meetings, school drop-offs, grocery shopping, and the never-ending cycle of laundry. So when it comes to meals, simple and delicious often wins out. And while I love experimenting with complex recipes and exotic ingredients, sometimes the simplest things are the most satisfying. Enter the BLT – a seemingly humble sandwich that, when made with the right ingredients and a touch of love, can be an absolute culinary triumph.

The beauty of the BLT lies in its simplicity. It's a blank canvas, really. The foundation – perfectly crisp bacon, juicy ripe tomatoes, and crisp lettuce – is a classic combination. But the possibilities for customization are endless. My personal twist? I always add a generous helping of mayonnaise for richness and a slight tang, and I love a good crack of freshly ground black pepper to elevate the flavors. But don't stop there! A touch of crunchy arugula adds a peppery bite, while thinly sliced red onions provide a sharp contrast. The addition of sweet or spicy pickles brings a delicious tang that perfectly complements the savoriness of the bacon and the sweetness of the tomatoes.

Beyond the ingredients themselves, the preparation is key to a truly exceptional BLT. I believe in sourcing the highest quality ingredients I can find. Locally sourced, thick-cut bacon is a must for me. It's the cornerstone of the entire sandwich, providing that satisfying saltiness and smoky aroma. The tomatoes? They have to be perfectly ripe, bursting with their summery goodness. I never use those hard, tasteless tomatoes from the grocery store – a juicy, heirloom tomato from a local farmer's market is my preference. And don't forget the bread! A good crusty bread provides the perfect sturdy base for this masterpiece. I often use sourdough for its slightly tangy and chewy texture, but a fresh Italian or French bread will do just as well.

More than just a sandwich, the BLT is a reminder to appreciate the simple pleasures in life. It's a celebration of fresh, seasonal ingredients, and a testament to the idea that sometimes the best things are the simplest. It's a quick lunch, a satisfying snack, or a perfect addition to a casual dinner. This versatile sandwich can bring joy to any occasion, whether it's a quiet lunch at my desk, a picnic in the park, or a casual gathering with friends. It's a recipe that's been passed down through generations, a testament to its timeless appeal. In short, the BLT is more than just a sandwich; it's a story of simple pleasures and culinary excellence.

So, the next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal that's both satisfying and delicious, I highly recommend trying my BLT recipe. You'll be surprised at how much flavor and satisfaction you can get from such a humble combination of ingredients. And remember, the key is to use the best ingredients you can find and to pay attention to the details, making it a perfect reflection of your own personal style and preferences. Let the BLT be a reminder that even the simplest of meals can be extraordinary.

I encourage you to experiment with your own BLT variations. Add your favorite toppings, play with different types of bread and bacon, and create your own unique twist on this classic sandwich. The beauty of the BLT lies in its versatility, allowing you to make it your own and savor the delightful experience of creating and indulging in this culinary masterpiece.

Step-by-step

    • Bake the bacon on parchment on a jelly roll pan in a 400? oven for around 20 minutes, give or take depending on how you like your bacon done.
    • Remove the bacon from the oven and drain on a paper towel.
    • Slice the bread and place in a medium hot skillet with some melted butter.
    • Toast the bread until it is golden brown on both sides.
    • Remove the toast from the skillet.
    • Wash the lettuce and slice the tomato.
    • Lightly coat both sides of the toast with a little mayo.
    • Place the lettuce and tomato slices on the toast and give that layer a good crack of black pepper.
    • Place the bacon on top and cover with the second piece of toast.
    • Slice in half and serve.
