Ropa Vieja (Cuban Shredded Beef)
I love this dish! Ropa vieja means old clothes in Spanish. The Cubans call this dish old clothes because of the look of the beef after it has been cooked. I have been trying to get my grandmother to teach me this recipe for ages, but she refused. So after a lot of trial and error, I came up with my own recipe.

I'm a housewife, and I love to cook Cuban food. Ropa vieja is one of my favorite dishes, and I've been trying to perfect my recipe for years. I finally got it right, and I'm so excited to share it with you! Ropa vieja is a traditional Cuban dish made with shredded beef. It's usually served with rice and beans, and it's a delicious and hearty meal.

The name "ropa vieja" means "old clothes" in Spanish. This is because the beef is shredded into thin strips, which resemble old clothes. The dish is said to have originated in Spain, where it was made with leftover beef. Over time, the dish was brought to Cuba and became a staple of Cuban cuisine.

There are many different ways to make ropa vieja, but my recipe is one of the easiest and most delicious. I start by browning the beef in a skillet. Then, I add the onions, peppers, and garlic and cook them until they are softened. Next, I add the tomato sauce, water, and sofrito. I simmer the mixture until the beef is shredded and tender.

I like to serve my ropa vieja with rice and beans. However, you can also serve it with other sides, such as mashed potatoes or plantains. No matter how you serve it, ropa vieja is a delicious and satisfying meal.

Step-by-step

    • Heat 3 Tbsp of cooking oil in a deep skillet on medium heat.
    • Place steak in skillet and brown on all sides and remove.
    • Add the remaining oil to the skillet with Garlic, Onion and green peppers; cook until the onions are translucent.
    • Stir in black pepper, meat, tomato sauce, water, and sofrito.
    • Simmer until meat shreds easily. Approx. 1 hour.
    • Server on top of rice.
    • You can get the recipe for sofrito on my page.
    • You can also add diced tomatoes if you want something chunkier or sliced green olives with pimientos.
