Homemade Dog Treats: A Simple Recipe for Happy Pups

My Furry Friends' Favorite Homemade Treats

As a busy mom, finding time to do everything can be a challenge, but one thing I always make time for is spoiling my beloved dogs. They are more than just pets; they’re family. And what better way to show your love than with delicious, homemade treats? I've always been passionate about making sure my dogs get the best nutrition, and that includes homemade food and treats. This recipe is not only easy and quick to whip up, but it's also incredibly adaptable to suit your furry friend's tastes. I love using what I have around the house and often change up the ingredients a little, depending on my mood and what’s on sale at the market. For example, sometimes I swap sweet potato for pumpkin baby food for seasonal variation!

Forget those overly processed, chemically laden commercial dog treats. These homemade goodies are made with love and simple ingredients, meaning you know exactly what your furry companion is eating. Plus, my dogs have particularly sensitive stomachs. This recipe is completely adaptable and very well-tolerated by my dogs, despite their digestion being rather sensitive. You can adapt this recipe to suit your furry friend’s preferences and dietary needs! I’m always delighted when I see the happy expressions on my dog's faces as they eagerly gobble down their yummy treats.

The Beauty of Simplicity: The best part about this recipe is its adaptability. Feel free to experiment with different types of baby food. Sweet potato and fruit are always a hit, but you can also try meat-based options (just be sure to avoid onions and garlic, as these can be toxic to dogs). Similarly, the type of flour is entirely up to you. I often use cornmeal, but all-purpose flour or even a gluten-free blend works perfectly. The key is to have fun with it! Let your creativity run wild, and see what your dog loves best.

Beyond the Recipe: This recipe represents more than just a way to spoil my dogs. It's a bonding experience, a chance to show my love in a tangible way. It’s a routine that we both enjoy. The process of making these treats is as much fun as watching them enjoy the end results. It is a small way to show my gratitude for their unconditional love and companionship. The happy wags and excited yelps make all the effort worthwhile.

A Tail-Wagging Success: These homemade dog treats are a guaranteed hit with your furry friends. The simple ingredients combine to create a delightful treat that's both healthy and tasty. Not only that but, the whole process is so straightforward, it doesn't require any special equipment or baking skills. Give it a try and watch your dog’s tail wag with joy!

More Than Just Treats: A Symbol of Love: In the end, the love and care that you put into making these treats will shine through. It's more than just feeding your dog; it’s about strengthening the bond that you share. So gather your ingredients, get your furry friend involved (supervise them, of course!), and enjoy the simple pleasure of creating something special together. Because ultimately, isn’t the time spent together the most valuable treat of all?

Tip: Store the finished treats in an airtight container to keep them fresh and crunchy. Your furry friends will thank you!

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 2 cups flour (I used cornmeal, but you can use any kind!)
  • 2 jars baby food (I used sweet potato and fruit, but meat-based is fine too! Just avoid onions and garlic.)
  • Extra flour for sprinkling (to prevent sticking)
  • Healthy oil (olive, coconut, or flaxseed – optional, for greasing the cookie sheet)

Step-by-step

    • Preheat oven to 335 degrees
    • Shake baby food jars as they tend to separate.
    • Pour baby food (your choice of a single flavor or mix two flavors together for added vitamins and nutrients) into a mixing bowl.
    • Spoon out any that remains in the jar.
    • Add 2 cups of your choice of flour and mix well. Make sure to combine completely so that when cooked your dog doesn't get a mouthful of plain flour.
    • Sprinkle flour on a tray (best to use one without a lip) or counter top.
    • You can choose to grease your cookie sheet or not. If you don't it will be a little more difficult to lift the cookies off. I used olive oil but any healthy oil is a perfectly fine option.
    • Take a chunk of the dough and flatten with a rolling pin though your hands will work just fine.
    • Use your cookie cutters to cut out the shapes you would like your cookies to be.
    • Place on cookie sheet leaving a little space between cookies. They will not spread much but could.
    • Place in 335 degree oven for 22 minutes.
    • Allow to cool and serve to your dogs. Be sure to put these in an airtight container so that they will last.
