Fruit Roll Ups for Back to School!
All fruits produce different results. I found that mangos produced the best results, but strawberries, blackberries and stone fruits will all work! Cooking time will vary depending on the fruit. If you are trying out different fruits, you may want to experiment to see what combos work best together or what fruits are best just on their own. I found the addition of honey to REALLY help with the texture and make the fruit roll ups chewy just like the store bought ones. The honey can be left out, but I do not recommend it. It is REALLY important to make sure the mix is all in one even layer. To help with this, I found topping the pan against the counter a few times really helpful. Other combos that I think would be awesome: mango, mango-pineapple, strawberry, strawberry-apple, strawberry-grape, apple-fig, blackberry, blackberry-mango, strawberry-plum

Back-to-School Fruit Roll-Ups: A Mom's Guide to Healthy Snacking

Back-to-School Fruit Roll-Ups: A Mom's Guide to Healthy Snacking

As summer winds down and the school bell is about to ring, I'm always on the lookout for healthy and convenient snacks my kids will actually enjoy. Forget the sugary, processed treats—this year, I'm taking snack time to a whole new level with homemade fruit roll-ups! Not only are these a delicious alternative to store-bought versions (which are often loaded with sugar and preservatives), but they're also a fantastic way to sneak in extra servings of fruit. Plus, making them together is a fun activity for the whole family. It's a win-win for busy moms like myself!

My journey to the perfect fruit roll-up wasn't without its trials. I experimented with various fruit combinations—mangoes, strawberries, blackberries, peaches, even a daring apple-fig blend! Some worked wonderfully, creating chewy, flavorful delights. Others, well, let’s just say they taught me valuable lessons in fruit compatibility. The key, I discovered, lies in the balance of sweetness and texture. A touch of honey acts as a magical ingredient, binding the fruit together and adding a delightful chewiness that rivals the store-bought versions. Don't be afraid to experiment—the possibilities are endless!

One crucial tip I learned along the way? Ensuring an even layer of fruit puree on the baking sheet is paramount. This guarantees even drying and prevents any sticky, uneven spots. I found a simple trick: gently tapping the baking sheet against the counter a few times helps distribute the mixture perfectly. Now, after countless batches (and a few delicious failures!), I'm happy to share my perfected recipe with you. This recipe is incredibly versatile, allowing you to adapt it to your family's favorite fruits.

Think of this as your invitation to unleash your creativity in the kitchen! Let your kids choose their favorite fruits, and get ready to transform them into vibrant, healthy snacks. The process is simple, the result is rewarding, and the smiles on your kids' faces when they bite into these homemade treats are priceless. These fruit roll-ups are more than just a snack; they’re a testament to your care, a taste of homemade goodness, and a delicious start to a fantastic school year. So gather your ingredients, prepare your little helpers, and let the fruit roll-up making begin!

Why homemade fruit roll-ups are the perfect back-to-school treat:

  • Healthier Choice: Control the ingredients and eliminate added sugars and preservatives.
  • Fun Family Activity: Get the kids involved in the process, making it a fun and educational experience.
  • Versatile & Customizable: Use any combination of fruits your family loves.
  • Convenient Snack: Perfect for lunchboxes, after-school snacks, or on-the-go munchies.
  • Cost-Effective: Often cheaper than store-bought alternatives.

Beyond the practical benefits, making fruit roll-ups with your children is a chance to connect, create memories, and demonstrate the importance of healthy eating. It’s about more than just filling lunchboxes; it's about fostering a love for wholesome food and creating special moments together. So, roll up your sleeves, gather your ingredients, and make some magic in the kitchen—your kids (and you!) will thank you for it!

Step-by-step

    • Preheat the oven to 150 degrees F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
    • In a blender, puree all the ingredients until completely smooth and no chunks remain, about 2 minutes.
    • Divide the mixture in 2 and pour onto the prepared baking sheets.
    • Spread the mixture to an 1/8? thick even layer. It is REALLY important to make sure the mix is all in one even layer. To help with this, I found topping the pan against the counter a few times really helpful.
    • Place in oven and bake for 6-8 hours, until center is not tacky anymore.
    • Remove from oven and allow to cool before cutting.
    • Cut into strips and roll them up!
