Atomic Buffalo Turds: A Culinary Adventure

My friends, today I'm sharing a recipe that's as unexpectedly delightful as it sounds: Atomic Buffalo Turds (ABTs). Now, I know the name might raise an eyebrow or two, but trust me, the taste is far more sophisticated than the moniker suggests. This recipe is a testament to the fact that sometimes, the most exciting flavors come from the most unlikely combinations. As a busy working mom, I appreciate recipes that are both impressive and easy to execute, and this one fits the bill perfectly.

The beauty of this dish lies in its adaptability. Feel free to experiment with different types of cheese, chili peppers, and even the dry rub. I prefer a mild brie to balance the heat of the jalapeños, but a sharper cheddar or even a creamy goat cheese could add another layer of flavor complexity. Similarly, the dry rub is a blank canvas for your culinary creativity; a smoky paprika blend or a classic BBQ rub would both work wonderfully. The key is to find a balance between the sweet, smoky, spicy, and savory elements. I often find myself making a big batch on the weekend, and they're perfect for entertaining guests or enjoying a cozy night in.

A Journey of Flavor: The recipe’s journey begins with the simple act of preparing the jalapeños – halving them, removing the seeds (adjust according to your spice preference!), and filling them with a luscious blend of chipotle honey. This sweet and smoky element provides a beautiful counterpoint to the heat. Next, each jalapeño receives a crown of creamy brie, enveloped by the salty embrace of streaky bacon. A quick sprinkle of dry rub adds the final touch before their journey to the grill.

The Dance of Heat and Smoke: The grilling process is where the magic truly happens. The indirect heat gently cooks the bacon to perfection, rendering it crispy and succulent while ensuring the jalapeños remain tender yet charred on the edges. The chipotle honey glaze adds another dimension of flavor, its sweet and smoky notes weaving their way through the savory ingredients. The process is incredibly satisfying; watching the ABTs transform from simple components into mouthwatering masterpieces. The aroma that fills the air is intoxicating.

Beyond the Recipe: This dish isn't just about the taste; it's about the experience. It's about gathering with friends and family, sharing laughter and stories, all while savoring these little fiery bundles of joy. It's about the unexpected adventure of flavor, and the delight of discovering a dish that transcends expectations. The recipe is simple, yet the results are extraordinary. Its versatility shines; you can easily adjust the spice level, experiment with cheeses, and explore different flavor profiles with the dry rub. For a quick weeknight meal or an impressive appetizer for a gathering, the Atomic Buffalo Turds never disappoint.

Perfect for Any Occasion: Whether you're a seasoned grill master or a kitchen novice, this recipe is approachable and rewarding. Its ease of preparation and deliciousness make it a go-to option for everything from casual weeknight dinners to more elaborate gatherings. It's the perfect appetizer for game day or a crowd-pleasing addition to your next barbecue. It's a recipe that speaks of culinary adventure, inviting you to embrace the unexpected and savor every moment.

A Culinary Reflection: Making Atomic Buffalo Turds is more than just cooking; it's an act of creation. It's a moment to disconnect from the daily grind and connect with your inner chef. The process itself is therapeutic – the careful preparation, the anticipation of the grilling, and finally, the immense satisfaction of creating something delicious. This recipe is a reminder that even the simplest dishes can hold immense pleasure, a lesson that is deeply meaningful in our often rushed modern lives.

Step-by-step

    • Cut the chills in half lengthways
    • Remove the seeds and placenta from each chilli.
    • Spoon about half a tsp to 1 tsp of Gran Luchito Chipotle Honey into each half chilli (depending on the size)
    • Top each one with a slice of brie and wrap with the bacon.
    • If needed use a cocktail stick to hold together.
    • Sprinkle each ABT with some dry rub and place in the fridge until ready to cook.
    • Set your grill up for indirect cooking (see our guide to Hacking Your BBQ) aiming for a temperature of between 250F and 300F.
    • If you’re running nearer 300F, cook for one hour then check; nearer 250F and you’ll be looking at about two hours.
    • What you’re trying to get here is the bacon starting to crisp up before you glaze.
    • For the glaze mix 3tbsp Gran Luchito Chipotle Honey and 1tbsp water in a pan and warm it up gently.
    • Apply glaze to ABT’s and cook for a further 15-30 minutes depending on your BBQ temperature.
    • Remove from grill and serve immediately.
